Day of the Dead is a pre-Hispanic holiday that has been celebrated for centuries throughout Mexico. The tradition includes the creation of altars that incorporate a wide range of cultural symbolism. In recent decades, the tradition has expanded into mainstream America. It has been through the collaboration between the traditional practice of building altars, and present day social issues that has created a new approach to the holiday. A wide range of activists have begun to utilize the holiday to advocate for various social issues. The film Dia de las Muertas focuses on how individuals utilize the holiday and its traditions to fight for justice. Viewers will leave with the various resources needed to incite progress in the movement supporting the over five hundred women that have been brutally raped and murdered in the city of Juarez, Mexico.—Anonymous
