Synopsis

Deverakanassu means The Dream of God, the protagonist Deva is a twelve year old boy living in a remote village called Heerypalaya of Karnataka in India, the people living in this village are farmers and their livelihood happens by cultivating grains, vegetables and from cattle, goat and chicken farm, they are very poor and struggle for their livelihood, owning a cycle is still considered as luxury in this village.The people of this village believe that the village temple goddess Gangamma is their protector and everything happens only with her blessings, however poor they are they celebrate Gangamma feast to the best of their ability, the major event of the festival is the cycle race for the kids.

Deva has a dream to own a bicycle like every other kid of this village and to achieve his dreams he makes many plans, Deva is a student of an English medium school he gets the admission through the government scheme for poor children where they don't have to pay fees, many students in his school are much more well-off and they all own a bicycle, Deva is moderate in his studies and he is the favorite student of Sangeeta Teacher, she supports him in studies and knowing that he is poor she buys him books and gifts.The reason for Deva being poor is because of his father Seena, his father works as a transport guide and earns very little, whatever money he earns he spends them on buying liquor and gambling, his father does not support his family and he even takes away the money earned by his mother.Deva's mother Lakshmi is a tailor by profession and she earns money stitching clothes and she has a cow and few goats she sells the milk and takes care of the household requirements and supports Deva for his education.Life is tough for Deva and achieving his dream of buying a bicycle is next to impossible, Deva's determination leads him to plan for buying a bicycle, first he decides to walk or take lift to and fro to the school and save money that his mother gives him to pay the bus fair, he starts gathering money and once in a while his mother also gives him money to save it for the bicycle, now he has a foolproof plan to buy a bicycle next he has to look for someone who can train him.He makes friendship with an old man Basheer who owns a bicycle repair shop, he makes an arrangement with him in a barter system of teaching his granddaughter Haseena English and in return he gets to learn cycle, days and months pass by he slowly he masters cycling and his savings for buying a cycle also starts accumulating in a better way, by now Haseena and Deva become good friends and both the families get attached to each other.One day Deva finds that his piggy bank in which he was saving money is missing, he thinks that his father has stolen it but it was that his mother has a miscarriage and his father takes his money for hospital expenses. Now his dream of buying bicycle is shattered and he has to start from beginning to save again.This time Deva plans of making quick and big money compared to earlier, he starts making paper bags and sells to the shopkeepers, his mother makes clothe bags and supports him in his earning, by now his father has also quit drinking and gambling and he also starts supporting Deva, the story ends with a tragic incident and the question is if Deva achieves his dream or he loses.
