Copenhagen in the 1990s. Middle-aged publisher Erik lives with a doctor called Anne in a childless and superficial marriage. At his job a young writer named Emma comes to see him, and he is fascinated by her. Meanwhile, the young playwright Stefan, who is equally fascinated with Emma, becomes one of Anne's patients.
