In 1999, a race of she-aliens, the Kilaaks, brainwash Earth's monsters into attacking major cities, prompting a team of astronauts to stop the invaders while the monsters battle Ghidorah.

Aliens have released all of Earth's monsters from their imprisonment on Monsterland and are using them to destroy all of the major cities on the planet. In the year 1999, all of Earth's monsters (Godzilla, Minilla, Rodan, Mothra and Anguirus, among others) are incarcerated on a small island chain near Japan. The Kilaaks, a race of aliens from a small planet located somewhere in the asteroid belt, release the beasts and send them to trample the cities of our world. In 1999, the United Nations has established bases on the Moon and on the Ogasawara Islands off the coast of Japan. Ogasawara is also where all of the world's monsters, including Godzilla, have been gathered for study and to keep them from wreaking havoc on the world.
