In Venice restorer Lukas drowns. His widow Anna arrives from Vienna and doesn't believe the police version of an accident. When a Botticelli painting is missing from the museum Lukas worked for he is suspected to have copied and stolen it.

Um herauszufinden, was in der Nacht am Canale passiert ist, nimmt Anna eigene Nachforschungen mit Unterstützung des besten Freundes des Verstorbenen auf. When Anna is asked by Lukas' client, the elegant director of an art museum, about a missing Botticelli painting, of which her husband made a copy, her doubts grow. She thinks she knows one thing for sure: Lukas would not get involved with art thieves for any money in the world. In order to find out what happened on the Canale that night, Anna starts her own investigations with the help of the deceased's best friend. The museum director Alexandra von Reuten and Captain Carlo Gabato from the Department of Protection of Art and Cultural Heritage discover Federica Patta and a businessman Frank Lee repeatedly observed the Botticelli painting before it disappeared. On the advice of Captain Gabato, Anna asks Rafael to take Paul back to Vienna. Anna discovers clues left by Lukas. It is related with a painting by Max Ernst. She rushes to the museum, where she finds von Reuten murdered. The Max Ernst painting was recently sent to Ansgar Baumgartner in Vienna. Anna goes back to Vienna to ask Baumgartner about the Botticelli painting, but he denies. Captain Gabato tells Anna about Rafael and his girlfriend Federica. His gallery was on the verge of bankruptcy when he received a lucrative offer from Frank Lee for the exchange of the Botticelli painting. Lukas was to falsify the painting for Rafael, who recommended him to the job in the museum. Anna and Captain Gabato find the Botticelli painting in the delivery box of the Max Ernst painting. Rafael, Federica, and Schuster, who works for Frank Lee, demand the painting in exchange for Paul. Rafael is shot by Schuster after Federica recognizes the painting for exchange is the forged one of Lukas instead of the original. The police arrest Federica and Schuster.
