Denshichi of Kuromoncho is a subordinate of a police constable. He punishes widespread evil in the backstreets of Edo with a purple truncheon entrusted to him by the inspector Toyama Saemon, who is the magistrate of Kitamachi. Denshichi condemns the crimes rather than the criminals and is sympathetic and kind.
