Synopsis

Nicholas Alexander (Jonathan H. Ragins) is a forty-eight-year-old, recently divorced practicing psychiatrist and university professor at a prominent and respected institution. Still stinging from the infidelity of his now ex-wife and the prospects of staring middle age in the face alone, for the past year Nicholas has been living a reclusive and guarded life. That is until he meets twenty-four-year-old Delilah Hernandez (Michelle Batista), a first-year graduate student at the university where he works. The two fall in love, and things quickly spiral out of control, leaving him questioning everything he thought he knew about life, love, and, more importantly, himself.

Despite his serious concerns and reservations, based on the difference in their ages, Delilah persuades Nicholas to accompany her to meet her parents for a special dinner at the family home. Delilah's mother (Akissa Mendez), while cautious, seems to be accepting of him and the situation, but her father (Anthony Quinones) has a different attitude altogether. The two have a not-so-friendly encounter, leaving Nicholas feeling dejected and insecure-feelings further amplified by Delilah's bizarre behavior in the presence of her parents.

When they get home later that evening, the couple have a heated argument, which leads Nicholas to the realization that things aren't exactly what he thought. Delilah is disgusted with him and storms off into the bathroom, leaving Nicholas in the bed alone. Delilah walks into a skate park where a young girl (Isabella Ali) is riding her skateboard. Delilah speaks with her. The little girl questions why she is there and tells her she shouldn't be. A voice calls out Delilah's name. The little girl tells her she has to leave and gathers her things. She tells Delilah not to worry; they will be okay. And she walks away.

Nicholas awakes to find himself still alone in the bed. He knocks on the bathroom door, but there is no response. He bursts into the bathroom and finds Delilah passed out on the toilet with a bag of what looks like heroin in her hand. He struggles to wake her up. She is groggy and speaks incoherently as she slowly comes out of it, telling him not to worry. She's okay. She can barely stand on her own. He leads her out of the bathroom and back to the bed.

The next morning, Delilah makes excuses to try and justify her behavior, and they argue again, ending with her storming upstairs. The doorbell rings, and it's his ex-wife, Vanessa (Virginia Caamaño). She wants to reconcile. When Delilah comes back downstairs to see who he's talking to, Nicholas has to make a decision that he's not prepared to make. Delilah decides to help him make the decision by leaving the house and going back to her own apartment.

After some time apart, Nicholas receives a phone call from Delilah's roommate, Zarin (Erika Bermudez), telling him that Delilah is in big trouble. He jumps out of bed, leaving Vanessa, and rushes to her aide. With Zarin leading the way, they find her in a drug den, where she's run afoul of a local dealer named Luna (Dayanne Pimenta), who threatens to kill her if she ever comes back there. They go back to Delilah's apartment, where she is confronted by Nicholas and Zarin about her addiction. Zarin, recognizing Nicholas' love for Delilah, forces her to expose the hidden reason behind it all. Delilah had been gang-raped by a previous boyfriend and three of his friends. A crime she never reported or told anyone about other than Zarin.

Feeling unburdened and vulnerable, Delilah and Nicholas decide to take a ride out of the city to get her favorite mint ice cream. The two lovers sit in the car, with Delilah enjoying her ice cream when Vanessa calls. This time, Nicholas is not confused. He loves Delilah. The two pledge their love and loyalty to one another and agree to never keep secrets from each other again. On the way back, they have a car accident that leaves Nicholas paralyzed from the waist down. Nicholas tries to dissuade Delilah from being with him now, as he feels she is too young to be tied down to someone in his condition. She refuses and reaffirms her love for him. Vanessa recognizes the bond between the two of them, and she and Delilah share a tender moment before she leaves.

Delilah comes into an upscale, suburban home. It is six years in the future. She looks different; her hair is shorter. She is greeted by a beautiful little girl and a nanny. Her name is Nichole. It is her daughter. Nicholas sits in his wheelchair on the back deck of the home, overlooking the property. He and his daughter are covered in paint. The little girl asks her mom to come and paint with them, but Delilah needs to excuse herself first. She goes upstairs, takes five small aluminum foil tabs from her pocket, and places them on the bed. She puts four of them under the mattress and sits down with one. She opens it and sniffs the heroin from it before lying back and drifting off to sleep.

The little girl from the skate is sitting on the edge of the bed, staring at Delilah as she sleeps. She gets up and walks towards the door. She stops and turns for a last look before turning away. Delilah walks out onto the deck with Nicholas and their daughter, who sits on the rug, coloring on a sketch pad. Nicholas asks if she is okay. She says she is trying. They smile at one another. She climbs into his lap and tells him to give her a ride. Ride or die, he says. They kiss.
