Synopsis

Ajay Sharma (Aamir Khan) is a photographer, Anita (Madhuri Dixit) is a model, and both of them work for the same advertisement agency.Ajay lives with his dad Nandkishore Sharma (Satyendra Kapoor) and mom (Beena Banerjee). Nandkishore bought camera and other equipment for Ajay out of his meager savings. They both love Ajay very much. Nandkishore is a poet and a romantic at heart.

Ajay is besotted with Anita. He has her posters all over his room. Sonu (Khushboo) is also a worker at the agency and teases Ajay about his infatuation with Anita. Ajay begs Sonu to tell Anita about his feelings for her. Sonu says that Ajay should have the courage to narrate his own feelings to Anita.

Ajay has fallen in love with Anita and thinks that she is also in love with him. But Anita only takes him for a friend. She treats Ajay actions as harmless infatuation and flirting.Anita lives with her elder sister (Ranjita Kaur). She advises Anita to be wary as this infatuation can turn into something more serious in the future if not stopped right now. She says that Anita should be scolding Ajay and not encouraging this behavior.The agency organizes an outdoor shooting for an ad campaign and Anita is the model, and Ajay is asked by director Bholaram Bokade (Dinesh Hingoo) to accompany the unit for the shoot.

Ajay saves Anita on a shoot when a horse goes out of control and runs away with her. Ajay endangers his own life to save her. Ajay takes Anita to an abandoned shed as they got separated from their shooting unit. Anita regains consciousness at night and is worried as she is all alone with Ajay. Ajay is nothing but a gentleman and the next day he delivers Anita to her home.

Anita's sister is further alarmed. She gets Anita engaged to Vikram (Jainendra), who is the son of Anita's father's friend, and the marriage is to take place soon. Anita asks her sister to let her complete her modeling contracts under the condition that she will not sign any new contracts.

Sonu secretly loves Ajay and is depressed that Ajay has eyes only for Anita and doesn't even acknowledge her love for him. Sonu is worried that Ajay might lose his own personality due to his blind love for Anita.Meanwhile Nandkishore and his wife are very supportive of Ajay's love towards Anita but are unaware that this love is one sided. Although Nandkishore warns Ajay that he is aiming for much higher than his social status in pursuing Anita. But Ajay is undeterred and believes that his pure love with triumph over any social gaps in their social standings.

Ajay's mother wants to meet Anita and Ajay decides to ask Anita to come home. Sonu informs Ajay that Anita is getting engaged that very day and hence would not be able to go to meet his mother. Ajay is still positive and believes that in the end Anita will marry him.Anita gets engaged to Vikram and that day Ajay visits Anita at her house. He puts an engagement ring on Anita's other hand and says in exactly one month's time Anita will marry him (Ajay). Ajay still believes that Anita loves him, and he also starts making preparations for his marriage with Anita.Anita must now take appropriate steps to stop Ajay's obsession with her, before the matter gets out of hand. Sonu counsels Anita not to escalate the matter to the police as Ajay is harmless.

One day Vikram and Anita are out for a drive and some goons harass Anita. Vikram chases them in his car and rams into them. He throws money at them to fix their damage, but Anita does not like how he put his own and her life in danger for this stunt.Meanwhile Ajay serenades Anita with love songs and paints his love declarations all over Anita and Vikram's house. Vikram assembles his goons and beats up Ajay very badly. Anita visits Ajay in hospital but is angry when he introduces her to his mother as her future daughter-in-law. Ajay's mother understands Anita's issue and takes her to Ajay's room, which is full of Anita's photos. Anita understands how deeply Ajay loves her.

Anita tells Vikram not to touch Ajay anymore. Ajay starts distributing cards for his wedding to Anita. Vikram is angry and abducts Ajay. Ajay escapes and sings a song at Anita's henna ceremony. Vikram has him arrested. His dad bails him out.

However, Anita realizes the person whom she is marrying does not love her. Vikram has won a big contract to manufacture and distribute foreign cosmetics in India and needs Anita to model for the same. He wants Anita to wear bikinis and stuff. She is angry and refuses.

The situation turns such that she realizes Ajay's love for her. She is attacked by the same goons that Vikram rammed earlier and only Ajay saves her in the nick of time. He bravely takes a few bullets for Anita, while Vikram runs away.
