A tribute to the life and films of the underrated expressionistic director John Brahm.

John Brahm was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1893. He grew up to become a light comedian on stage. The rise of Hitler forced him to leave Germany and move to England, where he got the chance to direct a remake of D.W. Griffith's "Broken Blossoms" (1919). The success of the film lead him to Hollywood, where he eventually directed the three 20th Century Fox horror films that are the primary subjects of this short documentary. Various film experts discuss Brahm's film career, which died as the studio system died, and lead to Brahm becoming a prolific director of TV episodes. Generous clips of the three horror films are shown.—J. Spurlin
