Civilian is a hybrid animation documentary that explores the 2019 Sudanese revolution through the eyes of young activists who risk their lives to topple Africa's longest-standing dictator, President Omar Al Bashir. Each journey is a story of hope and excitement, heartbreak and perseverance for the graffiti artist, the photojournalist, and the reporter who each discover the power of their voice to make change, but is the cost too high? Armed only with song, art, and poetry, they succeed in removing the President through a peaceful gathering of minds that captures the imagination of millions around the world, but the regime remains. When the sit-in is dispersed by a brutal massacre, the dreams of a nation are shattered. Hope turns to despair and alliances into deadly animosity, leaving our main characters to fend for themselves against a feared militia known as the Janjaweed. As the echoes of dissent reverberate through the streets, the relationship deteriorates between two warlords who will stop at nothing to remain in power. The cost of revolution is high on civilians; many lose their lives, even more are displaced, and the capital city of Khartoum is destroyed. The viewer journeys through our characters' stories and arcs through live action footage, animation, and news archive to witness the resilience and determination of youths demanding justice, freedom and civilian rule.—Mazin Gamar & Raya Hamdan
