Fifty years ago, Jean Rouch and Edgar Morin made Chronique d'un ete. Through a series of vignettes, the film followed the filmmakers as they enquired into the happiness, sadness and everyday lives of Parisians during the summer of 1960, combining the techniques of drama, fiction, provocation and reflexive critique. It is hailed as an experimental landmark in both ethnographic film and cinema in general. But, what has changed fifty years on? What can we learn about life in the UK - are people happy? And, does Rouch and Morin's format still have relevance today? What can we learn from revisiting their influential film? Chronicle of a Winter is the culmination of a three-month long project, re-imagining and re-creating selected scenes from Chronique d'un ete - and answering these pressing questions.—Anonymous
