Christine Madison has a great hunger in her heart for something - but she knows not what. She marries Stuart Knight, a drunkard, which leads to a disastrous union. After a year, she meets Dr. Alan Monteagle, a friend of her brother Dan. Alan becomes a sympathetic friend. She visits his clinic and the two often spend time together. Eventually they realize they are in love with each other. But Christine is horrified at how she feels, and leaves Alan, determined never to see him again. On her way home, her car is run into by Stuart, drunk as usual, with a woman at his side. Christine is seriously injured, and Alan saves her life. Christine divorces Stuart and marries Alan. For several years, the two are happy. They have a son, Jeffy. Then Alan becomes absorbed in his work, and Christine becomes lonely. When Alan is called out of the city on an important case, Christine begs him to take her with him, but he thinks she'll only be in the way. Left alone, Christine looks about for something to make her forget. She finds Ivan Vianney interesting, and before long he admits he is in love with her. Christine sends him away, but when Alan's stay is protracted, she decides to go with Ivan, taking Jeffy with her. They go to Rio de Janeiro, but are met there with a summons to return Jeffy to his father. So Christine is forced to send the boy back. When he goes, she realizes how foolishly she has acted. She breaks off with Ivan. A year later, broken in health and spirit, she steals up to the Monteagle home, hoping for a last look at Alan and Jeffy. Through the window, she sees Alan, Jeffy, and her brother Dan. What she doesn't know is that they are grieving for her. Christine goes to a little church to offer a prayer, and decides to end her life by jumping into a river. Her plan is interrupted when she finds Stuart hiding at the church, having escaped from prison. Stuart does not have long to live. She takes him to a small mountain cabin, and cares for him. Her brother Dan finds her on the day Stuart is dying. Alan and Jeffy accompany Dan. Alan feels he has failed Christine, and is very contrite. Wishing to make amends, he asks her to come him with him, Jeffy, and Dan. Christine gratefully accepts the offer.
