While driving to return to the Vatican, Father Rosetti is attacked by two men driving motorcycles and they have an accident on the road. Father Rosetti survives, but is catatonic in a hospital. His assistant, Father O'Carroll, is summoned to the Vatican and assigned to investigate 15-year-old Margaret Gallager in Pennsylvania, who is pregnant but claims that she is a virgin. Her agnostic physician, Dr. Phinney, confirms the virginity of the teenage girl. Father O'Carroll returns to the Vatican and is informed about a second case of virgin pregnancy in Boston, and also learns that one of the babies that will be born is the Christ and the other is the Antichrist and he must determine which one is which.
