Laxmi and her three male schoolmates study in a small rural school in India. They face considerable opposition and taunts as they come from a very poor background. This does result in considerable exclusion, with the three friends find themselves all by themselves. Then one day they come across a youth who calls himself Chetan, who wears a loincloth, and cannot speak a word. They find that he has magical qualities and can perform several athletic feats. 2 men Raja (Ravi Baswani) and Mr. Anthony Gonsalves (Harish Kumar) uses many means to find a treasure inside Mantravadhi's house. Raja is a pickpocket and served time for 4 years, while Anthony is a cycle thief.First, they use Baba Khondol (Shakti Kapoor) and later more scientific methods with Professor Chashmish (Satish Kaushik). They try when Mathravadhi is out of the house but fail every time. Mathravadhi has a talisman which he removes from his ritual setting, every time he leaves the house.
There are cruel magicians everywhere in the world. One of them is Karimbhootham / Manthravadhi (black magician), who enslaved an invisible spirit with his magic spells, whom he calls "Kuttichathan" ("Little Goblin" in English and "Chhota Chetan" in Hindi).
The children have heard local folk stories of Chetan that Chetan is friendly to kids and is a very good friend to enjoy with. But Chetan is also known to drink a lot. Laxmi (Sonia) and her 2 male schoolmates' Vijay (Suresh), Vinod (Arvind) study in a small rural school in India. They face considerable opposition and taunts as they come from a very poor background. This does result in considerable exclusion, with the three friends find themselves all by themselves.They want to find Chetan and befriend it, as they believe that Chetan can help them improve their lives. Laxmi's father (Dalip Tahil) is a drunk but loves Laxmi no end. Laxmi's mother has passed away and she misses her a lot. Laxmi's father is an artist by profession. He draws his imagination of what Chetan should look like.
The 3 friends enter when Mathravadhi's out of the house & find his talisman in the grounds. They release Chetan (M. P. Ramnath) by accident, while playing with the Talisman. They come across Chetan, who wears a loincloth, and cannot speak a word. They find that he has magical qualities and can perform several athletic feats. Laxmi and her friends befriend Chetan and play with him who comes out of the house to meet them.The kids release Chetan from the grip of the magician Manthravadhi (Kottarakkara Sridharan Nair).
Chetan can take any form, as he is a spirit, but his forms scare the kids, until he takes the form that Laxmi shows him (the drawing that her father made of Chetan). Chetan wants the kids to save the talisman, which is the key to his freedom. Chetan asks the kids to hide the talisman.Laxmi asks Chetan to stay with her at her house. Chetan entertains the kids by creating music and getting all the toys to dance to his tunes. He also enables the kids so they can climb and walk upside down on walls and the ceiling.
Chetan also helps the kids avenge their humiliation at the hands of the rich school bully. Chetan helps the kids to chase his car on their hand pulled rickshaw, throw water the rich kid (as he would throw mud at them) and burst the tires of his Mercedes car.
Mathravadhi is angry to find that Chetan is gone. He starts a ritual to find Chetan's location and to recover him back into his custody and captivity. Nobody can see Chetan except the 3 kids. Mathravadhi sees magical things happening with the kids and knows that Chetan is with them.Laxmi takes Chetan to a bar where her father spends his time. Chetan drinks everything in the bar.
Meanwhile Raja and Anthony are looking for a magician who can defeat Mantravadhi and can get them the treasure. They find Hawa Hawai (Urmila Matondkar) the only female magician in India. Hawa Hawai has the same sign of the talisman that is associated to Chetan.
Hawa Hawai decides to collaborate as she wants Chetan, and the guys want the treasure. Hawa Hawai tells the guys that her father created Chetan as a pure soul in the temple many years ago. But Mantravadhi was her father's servant and stole Chetan for petty gains. She wants to restore Chetan to the temple.She thwarts Mantravadhi's attempt to capture Chetan at the kid's school. But Mantravadhi detects Hawa Hawai's presence and turns her into a cat with his spells.
Chetan tells the kids that Mantravadhi is using Chetan's powers to release a large treasure hidden in the old house, which is protected with spells. Chetan says one day he will have to leave the kids. But Laxmi wants him to get her father to stop drinking before he leaves. Chetan obliges her by destroying the bar where Laxmi's father frequents. Father hits Laxmi in frustration but is repentant and gives up drinking.
For Chetan's farewell party, the kids use the talisman, which turns Hawa Hawai back to human form and gives Mantravadhi his location, who quickly captures Chetan. Laxmi enters the house to look for Chetan. Vijay and Vinod follow. They find Hawa Hawai at the house entrance. She uses the talisman to break the defenses erected by Mantravadhi. Chetan is free and kills Mantravadhi.He turns into a bat and flies away.
