A train is traveling through northern England. Xenia Paget, traveling alone, feels threatened by a man. As she flees the compartment, she meets police officer Kate Linville, who is on her way to Scarborough on private business, where she will soon be taking up her new post. At the last second, the two women escape into the train toilet before the unknown man shoots through the door. At the next station, the perpetrator has disappeared without a trace. Kate soon learns of another attack in nearby North Yorkshore. A teacher is in the emergency room, paralysed up to the neck, after a serious bicycle fall caused by a stretched wire along the path. What is unusual is that the shot fired at the victim lying on the ground came from the same gun that was fired on the train. Initially without the suspended chief Caleb Hale, Kate searches feverishly for a connection between the two cases.
