Despite working as a courier delivery-man, he is unable to pay his rent and is evicted by his landlord's brother. He ends up as Dance Teacher in Model High School, sneaks every morning into the school to use it's facilities and lives in his car while romancing cute choreographer Tina Sharma. Meeting Rajeev Sharma, he is promised a lead role in a movie but later finds he has to compete in a nation-wide contest. Disillusioned at this rejection, he despairs but is encouraged by Tina. It is then he receives bad news about his dad and decides he must return immediately, perhaps never to fulfill his late mother's dream.—rAjOo ([email protected])
Sameer Behl (Shahid Kapoor) comes to Mumbai with Bollywood dreams. Sameer was a handsome boy from his childhood and always told by everyone that he should go to Mumbai and become a hero in Hindi films. Sameer's father counseled him against going to Mumbai, as he said that the chances of Sameer landing a leading role in a film are next to none. Sameer still goes.Sameer's father runs a Saree shop in Delhi.
Sameer keeps failing in auditions for advertisements. Sameer refuses to take help from his dad in Delhi even though he has been struggling in Mumbai for over 3 years now. All Sameer had managed to accomplish in 3 years was a Lungi advertisement for a South Indian brand, which helped pay the bills and helped Sameer buy a 2nd hand car.Gaurav is Sameer's only friend in Mumbai who constantly borrows money from Sameer even for his petty expenses and even stays in Sameer's house even though his landlord frowns at it. Sameer is thrown out from his rented flat by the landlord (Kurush Deboo) as he is far behind on his payment of rent.
Tina (Genelia D'Souza) is a choreographer who has seen Sameer dance (when he arrived to give an audition) & likes his work, but is unable to get him any work because of the nepotism rampant in the film industry. Even though Sameer is immensely talented, the roles go to people who have connections and power. To make ends meet Sameer moonlights as a courier delivery guy but is fired from his job as he his never punctual and takes 2 months of salary in advance.
One day, a movie director, Rajeev Sharma, (Mohnish Behl) sees Sameer dancing at a club and calls him to his office. Soon Sameer is signed as the male lead in his film (which is based on dance) and friend Tina (Genelia D'Souza) is selected as the choreographer on the same project. For Sameer this is a dream come true & in his excitement, Sameer does not insist upon a contract from Rajeev. Bunty (Prince Rodde) is the assistant director on the project.
A homeless Sameer sleeps in his car as he has nowhere else to go. His fair weather friend Gaurav (Vikas Bhalla) completely turns his back on him (he refuses to even pick his phone when he calls trying to ask for a place to stay) & even refuses to pay back the loans he had taken from Sameer even though he has money to treat his girlfriends to coffee.
Sameer then finds work as a dance teacher in a school run by principal (Satish Shah), which pays Rs 6000 per month. Sameer takes the job as he believes this is temporary till his movie starts filming. The school has a sports team and a drama team which has always won inter school tournaments in previous years, but the dance team came 22nd and last.
Sameer parks his car outside the school & sneaks into the school bathroom for his morning routine early in the morning. Sameer tries to engage Rajeev to start his film, but Rajeev keeps postponing the date. Sameer starts to like his gig at the school & love the challenge to motivate the bunch of young aspiring students to prepare for an annual inter school dance competition. The students call Sameer Soyabean, as he was found sleeping in class on day. The students believe that dancing is for losers, but Sameer shows them that dancing can be a mesmerizing art when performed properly. The students get excited about Sameer's class.Turns out Tina is the elder sister of one of his students Randeep (Zain Khan).
Subsequently, Sameer loses his film when Rajeev announces on national TV that he is launching a dance competition & the winner of the competition will be the hero of his new film. Rajeev asks Sameer to participate in the show to have a chance to star in the film, just like all the others. The lack of contract means Sameer has no way to prove that Rajeev had made promises to Sameer to star him in his film.
Tina finds out this and asks him how he can spend his life like this. Sameer is dejected going through the ups and downs of a struggling actor in the film industry. He tells Tina that he does not have the energy to face the vagaries of luck which always seems to go against him, no matter how hard he tries.Sameer takes solace in helping his group of students to win the annual dance competition. The kids find out that Sameer sleeps in his car & come together to help him in every way possible.
After some time, Tina tells him that she also quit the film and did not want to be the choreographer for that film because she saw him upset. Sameer realized the love Tina had for him. Tina encourages him to participate in a television talent-hunt show, the winner of which will win the same role that Sameer was to play. After some time, he agrees to participate in it. After filling up the contest form, he also says "I love you" to Tina.
In his screen-test, Sameer dedicates his monologue to his mother. After his monologue, during the interview, he comes to know that his father's shop in Delhi has been demolished. He promises Tina that he will come back for her and leaves. He leaves Mumbai to meet his father, heart-broken about the whole thing. After watching Sameer's performance in the TV, his father convinces him to go back to Mumbai and participate in the show.
After coming back to the show, he is initially denied an entry at the show due to his late entry, however he is given a chance to perform at the show after Sameer convinces the director, Rajeev to at least give him this chance. He wins the show and is shown later to be the hero of the movie "Chance Pe Dance" walking the Red Carpet a year later with Tina.
