Could you give up your car for a week? Two households give up their cars for a week while a car-centred city struggles to redefine itself.
This independent documentary weaves together several journeys: two Calgary households going car-free for a week; a group of Calgarians sharing their experiences being car-free and car-light; and a grocery trip being done on foot in real time. Contributing to the film's narrative are two directors and one coordinator from the City of Calgary-three key individuals invested in implementing the sustainable transportation hierarchy for their car-centred city. This hierarchy encourages the greatest number of citizens walking, cycling and using transit with the least number using single occupancy vehicles. Carl Honoré, author of The Slow Fix, provides his perspective on why individuals and societies have embraced the car - and why there are no fast or easy solutions to lessen our dependence on it.—Peter Tombrowski
