An emergency room physician in a hospital is also a Buddhist monk who, as the hospital's chaplain, provides both medical and spiritual healing to its patients.

Teruyuki Matsumoto renounced the world to become a Buddhist Monk after he had witnessed the drowning of his friend in his childhood. However, he decided to become a doctor in order to save the life of his loved one. Working at the Emergency Room, he not only provides medical care to the patients, but also provides solace to the dying and performs the final rites for the dead at the morgue. As he is still wearing his monk's robes, he sometimes confuses the patients, making them think they have died. With his constant chanting and preaching, not only does he irritate the patients, but many-a-time, his fellow doctors think of him as a nuisance. Amongst them are Ryoko Miyake, a fellow doctor at the ER, whose outlook in life is totally opposite that of Teruyuki but she recognizes and appreciates his skills as a doctor; Tatsuya Hamada, a renowned heart surgeon, who often clashes with Teruyuki over the patients' treatments; Mashiro Kojima, an rookie heart surgeon who is interning under Hamada.
