Synopsis

Reading from a diary a lad comes to know about a nobleman from Jaisinghpur, Sartaj Rana (Raj Babbar). Sartaj had saved Lovely's dying pregnant mother from a car crash & she gave birth to Lovely & Lovely knows this & has an immense sense of gratitude for Sartaj.

One day, a woman comes to Sartaj, requesting his help to rescue her daughter, who has been abducted by sex traffickers. The woman alleges that her brother works on the ship MV Arun Sagar, which will be used to transport the girls to Thailand. The police are in cahoots with the kidnappers.Since the ship is docked in Mumbai, Sartaj calls a security agency headed by Bindra (Sharat Saxena) to send his men to free the girls. Instead of sending a force, Bindra sends Lovely Singh (Salman Khan). Upon hearing that this is Sartaj's job, Lovely immediately attends to it. Lovely attacks the docks alone, defeats the junior Mhatre brothers (Chetan Hansraj and Salim Baig) and frees the girls.Sartaj invited the wrath of the Mhatre brothers, Ranjan (Mahesh Manjrekar) and Vikrant (Aditya Pancholi) by disrupting their business.

Feeling threatened by the Mhatre brothers, Sartaj hires Lovely as a bodyguard for his collegian daughter, Divya (Kareena Kapoor), and her friend, Maya (Hazel Keech). Sartaj has plans to marry off Divya to a guy in London after she finishes college.Shekhar (Govardhan Asrani) is the manager of Sartaj's estate, while Surinder Narender Milkha 'Tsunami' Singh (Rajat Rawail) is also a servant of the house.

Now Divya is embarrassed that Lovely accompanies her to college. Divya does not appreciate being followed around by Lovely over the entire campus, including inside the classrooms. Divya specifically hates the formal uniform that Lovely insists on wearing while he follows her.She tries to get rid of him with pranks like burning his uniform, but Lovely simply gets another uniform made overnight.Lovely is also in charge of teaching self defense classes to Divya and Maya and puts them through a grueling physical fitness regime.

Divya then creates a fictional woman, Chhaya, who distracts him by repeatedly phoning him and telling him that she loves him. Divya as Chhaya tells Lovely that she loves his uniform, this prompts Lovely to ditch his uniform and revert to normal clothes, much to Divya's relief.What begins as a prank turns serious as Lovely believes this person to be real and falls in love.Meanwhile Mhatre's men had been searching for Divya and finally locate her.

In a bar, Ranjan's brother attacks Divya and is killed by Lovely. Sartaj is worried for Divya's safety, but Lovely promises Sartaj to return Divya safely to him, once the college is over.

Divya understands Lovely's devotion to his job & her & falls in love with him & says so as Chhaya. The 3rd Mhatre brother, Vikrant makes an entry and swears revenge on Sartaj.

Divya confesses her love to Maya who advises here not to reveal her feelings to Lovely as he treats Sartaj as God & would never betray his trust by having feelings for Divya.

Divya doesn't listen to Maya & leads Lovely on. Divya tells Lovely that she wants to meet him, and this angers Maya. But when Lovely goes to meet Chhaya, Divya insists on going with him. Divya then hides from Lovely and calls him as Chhaya and says that she believes that Divya has feelings for Lovely and hence refuses to meet him. The idea was to break Lovely's heart and to get him to move on from Chhaya.In one of the phone conversations the maid Savita (Reema Debnath) hears Divya talking to Lovely, taking his name & tells Sartaj.Divya wants to run away with Lovely, but can't tell him that she is Chhaya, so asks him to meet him at railway station. Lovely refuses as he has to return Divya home as her college is over.

Sartaj tries to call Lovely to clear the confusion, but Vikram attacks at that moment. This makes Sartaj believe that Savita is telling the truth and that indeed Lovely is running away with Divya. Lovely kills the Mhatre brothers & saves Divya, but this is when Sartaj attacks him. Divya intervenes & tells Sartaj that Lovely loves Chhaya who is waiting at station.Sartaj allows lovely to go but sends an assassin to kill Lovely if no one is waiting for him at the station. Divya sends Maya to Station to save Lovely's life because Lovely's cell phone is lost in the fight.Divya tells Maya to tell Lovely the truth about her. But when Divya calls Maya later, Maya throws her own cell phone away & assumes the identity of Chhaya, whom Lovely accepts.

Sartaj calls Lovely several years later, when Maya is dead of cancer & Lovely has a son. He reveals the truth to Lovely & tells him that Divya never married & then hands over Divya to him.
