Raj, the son of strict, wealthy parents, falls in love with Bobby, the daughter of a poor Christian fisherman -- a romance his parents oppose.

Mr. Nath lives a very wealthy lifestyle in India along with his wife, Sushma, and a 6 year old son, Raj. Both he and Sushma lead a very busy life, so much so that they have no quality time to spend with Raj, leaving his care, even breast-feeding, to their maidservant, Mrs. Braganza, who Raj regards as his mother. When Mr. Nath finds Raj to be precocious, he has him enrolled in a distant boarding school. When Raj returns after 12 years, he does not find any change, save that Mrs. Braganza does not work there anymore as she has been fired by Sushma. At his 18th birthday party, he meets with flirtatious Nima, and this is when he sets his eyes on Bobby, Mrs. Braganza's 16 year old granddaughter, and falls head over heels in love with her. To his delight he finds that she also loves him, much to the chagrin of his parents, who agree to meet with Bobby's dad, Jack, and Mrs. Braganza, but humiliate them. This does not deter Raj and Bobby and they continue to meet, so much so that Mr. Nath instructs him not to leave the house or he will have him and the entire Braganza family arrested if they attempt to get the young couple married, as they are minors and must attain the age of 21 to be married. Raj decides to wait for 2 more years and accordingly writes to Bobby. Raj will soon realize that his parents have already selected a wife for him, in the shape and form of Alka Sharma, the only daughter of wealthy Mr. Sharma. Synopsis

The story is about the love between two Bombay teenagers of different classes-Raj Nath (Rishi Kapoor), the son of a rich Hindu businessman Mr. Nath (Pran) and wife Sushma (Sonia Sahni), and Bobby Braganza (Dimple Kapadia), the daughter of a poor Goan Christian fisherman Jack Braganza (Prem Nath) and Mrs Braganza (Durga Khote).Mrs Braganza was Raj's nanny before he was sent to boarding school. Mrs Branganza was very critical of Sushma's parenting skills with regards to Raj and blamed her for his waywardness.

Raj returns from his boarding school (Mr Nath had sent him there to discipline him as Raj was too naughty as a young kid. once at a party he bit the cheek of Mrs Pestonji (Piloo J. Wadia) when she asked him to kiss her). Shaym (Shashi Kiran) was Raj's college mate and was a bad influence, but Raj never got into his sphere of influence and always took permission from his parents for all big decisions. Shyam gets frustrated and yells at Raj that his parents never loved, and which is why they dumped Raj at a boarding school.

Upon his return (There was no-one at home to receive Raj and he is super disappointed. They come home for 2 mins to say hello and then go back to their own lives. Raj is more and more convinced of what Shyam said), his parents throw a party to celebrate his birthday (Mr Nath used Raj's birthday as an occasion to invite all his business customers). Neema (Aruna Irani) is a socialite and a good friend of Sushma and starts hitting on Raj from the moment she sees him.His governess as a child Mrs. Braganza comes to wish him with her granddaughter Bobby, whom Raj notices among the crowds attending his party. Mrs. Nath ignores Mrs. Braganza, which leads her to leave the party with her granddaughter in a rush.

Raj opens his gifts the next day and finds Mrs. Braganza's gift, so he decides to go and meet her. Reaching there, her granddaughter Bobby opens the door for him, and it is love at first sight for him. Bobby also reinforces the message to Raj that he was sent to boarding school as punishment. Raj returns home and confronts his parents about this, who are angry that Mrs Braganza is poisoning Raj against them.

During that visit, he mixes his book with Bobby's, so he goes to meet her at the library to exchange the books, and from that, both start their friendship. Bobby is charmed by Raj's innocence and honesty. Mrs Pestonji witnesses their budding romance at a coffee shop.Raj continues to see Bobby at her badminton game, or the pool (in a 2 piece bikini). Friendship turns into love.

Raj and Bobby decide to go to see a movie (Raj takes Jack's permission to take Bobby for a movie) but find out it is a full house. Then Raj gets an idea to go to a party (he had met Neema earlier in the day and she had invited him for a party at her house). At the party, Bobby sees Raj talking to Neema (Aruna Irani) privately and thinks he is in love with her. Shyam is also at the party and hits on Bobby. Shyam fools Bobby into believing that Raj loves Neema and tries to sexually assault her. Bobby runs away, while Raj beats up Shyam.

Bobby wants to get away and goes on a school trip to Kashmir. Raj follows. Bobby is angry with Raj, but later realizes his love for her, when he saves her from falling off a horse into a 1000 ft drop into a ravine. As the story progresses, Raj realizes that his relationship with the daughter of a poor fisherman is not taken kindly by his eccentric father. Upon Raj's insistence, Mr. Nath invites Jack Braganza to initiate talks of Raj and Bobby's wedding. Raj had told them that Jack does a fishing business.

But instead, Mr. Nath insults him (when he realizes that Jack is a fisherman himself) and accuses Jack of using his daughter's beauty and charm to trap Raj for his money. He later offers Jack cash to stop Bobby from seeing Raj. Jack feels highly humiliated by this accusation and reciprocates by insulting Mr. Nath. Their talk enters a deadlock and spells doom for Raj and Bobby's tender love.Raj wants to leave the house, but Nath reminds him that he is not yet 21 yrs old and if he tries to marry Bobby, he will be put in jail.

Mr. Nath engages Raj to a mentally challenged wealthy girl, Alka (Farida Jalal) daughter of Mr Sharma (Pinchoo Kapoor) and Mrs Sharma (Raj Rani), to establish business ties with her rich father. But Raj runs away from home to unite with Bobby. But Mrs Branganza (who is in the Goa village with Bobby) asks Raj to leave as he has come without the permission of his parents. She sends a telegram to Mr Nath to come and collect Raj. Raj & Bobby run away together. Meanwhile Mr Nath and Jack both swear to kill their kids if they find them together.

Mr. Nath advertises a reward for anyone who can help find his son. while at a rest stop, Prem Chopra (Prem Chopra) identifies Raj and Bobby as the runaway kids and decides that he wants the money, and he and his goons kidnap Raj and Bobby. When they try to escape, Prem starts beating Raj. Mr. Nath and the police come to help, and they find Jack already there attempting to help Raj. Raj and Bobby run away from their fathers and jump over a waterfall. Mr. Nath and Jack jump into the water after them. Mr. Nath rescues Bobby, while Jack rescues Raj.

They realize that they love their children very much and don't want to stand in the way of their happiness. They accept each other's kids as their own and give their blessings to the union.
