Serf farmer Thomas is assigned to guard the forest. Foma has to catch the same serfs, like himself, who came to the forest without the permission of the master to hunt or chop firewood. In the village he is disliked and nicknamed "Biryuk" for his sullen and unsociable character. In fact, Thomas is a kind, conscientious man, lives together with his young daughter Ulita simply and strictly.
