Bud Reeves (Eric Linden) leaves his Indiana home with a small inheritance and goes to New York City with the intention of moving there permanently, despite warnings that New York is a tough town. In New York he meets his fast-talking cousin Gibboney (Walter Catlett) who preys upon Bud's naivete and uses Bud's money to throw an elaborate party in the expensive hotel room that Bud has rented and invites several guests. At the party Gibboney introduces Bud to chorus girl Vida Fleet (Joan Blondell) and Bud is immediately smitten with her. During the party, Jackie Devoe (Josephine Dunn) gets drunk and falls unconscious. An argument starts between Shep Adkins (Humphrey Bogart) and Lenny Sully (Lyle Talbot) over who will take home Jackie, which escalates to violence and Jackie is killed by a bottle that is thrown. Everyone but Bud flees the room, where the body is discovered by house detective Hummell (Guy Kibbee). Vida comes to retrieve Bud, but they are separately spotted by Hummell, who reports them to the police before Vida finds Bud. Bud meets Serena Cartlich (Jobyna Howland), who takes him to a gambling club where Bud reunites with Vida. Very quickly Bud loses all his remaining money at a dice game. They are promptly arrested by a policeman who tailed Vida all day. The police round up the other party guests and intend to sweat them out despite Bud's insistence he and Vida are innocent.—Patrick Depew
