Ranjit, who makes fun of idiots, gets completely annoyed when he invites a tax inspector and a singer to his house.
Ranjeet Thadani lives a wealthy lifestyle in Mumbai along with his wife, Sheetal, who is a singer, while he manages Soundtrack Industries. At the request of his friend, Jagdish Verma, he decides to invite a singer and Libran, Bharat Bhushan, to his residence for dinner, as well as listen to him sing. Ranjeet, suffering from back pain, does not realize that Bharat is also an Income-Tax Inspector, and upon arrival at Ranjeet's residence, will virtually and hilariously turn his life upside down.—rAjOo ([email protected])
Ranjeet Thadani (Rajat Kapoor) is a music producer married to Sheetal (Sarika) a singer (Sheetal complains that Ranjeet is too self-involved and doesn't care for her). Ranjeet and his friends get together every Friday for a party. This is a different kind of party where they invite idiots to ridicule them behind the scenes and calling them "talent". They enjoy doing it so much that they don't even mind missing out on family appointments.One of Ranjeet's friends meets Bharat Bhushan (Vinay Pathak), an inspector in the Income Tax Department, on a trip to Pune and decides that he could probably be a source of entertainment for Ranjeet. Ranjeet promptly calls Bharat and invites him for dinner.
Bharat is a talkative self-promoting singer who carries with him a scrap book showcasing his musical life. He is excited at the prospect of meeting a music producer which might help advance his career as a singer. Bharat is kind of heart and wants to help everyone, but he also has the ability to mess things up for people around him. He can be annoying to the person who is sitting next to him, but he makes it a funny experience for everyone else watching him.
Friday arrives but Ranjeet's back is sprained badly and is restricted from moving around. Ranjeet knows that he will not be able to make it to the party but still decides to meet with Bharat to see how good or rather bad he is. Before Bharat arrives at Ranjeet's residence, Sheetal leaves after an altercation with Ranjeet (she dislikes making fun of people and their feelings and leaves before Bharat Bhushan arrives).
Bharat's father was a clerk at the Gandharva Mahavidyalaya and that's how Bharat got interested in singing. He carries a honey made drink with him, as its good for his throat. Bharat shows Ranjeet his photo album and the meager achievements of his singing career. He is a bachelor, since his wife left him.. He counted the Ayegas in the song "Ayega, Ayega", and the Chaltes in the song "Chalte, Chalte".Ranjeet decides to take him to the talent party after all, but Bharat drops Ranjeet while taking him to the car and his back injury aggravates. Then Sheetal calls telling Ranjeet that she has left him and is not going to come back home.
When Ranjeet asks Bharat to call his family doctor (Tom Alter), he accidentally calls Ranjeet's girlfriend Suman Rao (Bhairavi Goswami). Suman decides to come over to meet Ranjeet. Ranjeet asks Bharat to call Suman and tell her that Sheetal is back and not to come over. Bharat gets into a conversation with Suman and starts singing for her. Suman figures that Bharat is lying and that Sheetal is not home. She is on her way.Ranjeet asks Bharat to leave his home for all the mess he has created. Bharat is offended and says that he shared all intimate secrets with Ranjeet. Ranjeet reveals that Sheetal used to be with Music Director Anant. Anant brought an album idea to Ranjeet, many yrs back. Ranjeet didn't make the album, but stole Sheetal from Anant.Ranjeet tries to get information regarding Sheetal's whereabouts (he pretends to be a Bhojpuri film producer and wants the rights to Anant's album Jantar Mantar). Bharat offers to help and calls Sheetal's previous boyfriend Anant Ghoshal (Milind Soman) under a false identity. On the first try, Bharat forgets to ask Anant about Sheetal..Instead, he ends up giving Ranjeet's Landline number (as Anant was on his mobile and said he would call back) that makes it obvious to Anant that Ranjeet is trying to get all details. Anant says he has been waiting for this moment for many yrs, but they both don't mean ill to each other.
Meanwhile Sheetal returns and Bharat opens the door and identifies her as Suman Rao. He indicates that Ranjeet meets Suman 3-4 times a week. Sheetal leaves again.Anant arrives shortly thereafter and tells Ranjeet that Sheetal is going to Keval Arora, a sex-freak (he also says that Sheetal came to meet Ranjeet, but he has no knowledge of it)
It turns out that a colleague of Bharat, Asif Merchant (Ranvir Shorey), who is also an inspector in the income tax department, knows the whereabouts of Keval (who runs a fake DVD racket). Asif is a snobby character who loves to watch cricket and is an ardent fan of Pakistan. Asif agrees to bring the address, but the file is in office and he hasn't had dinner as yet. So, Ranjeet invites Asif to his house as well.Ranjeet tries to order pizza but gets frustrated with the constant interruptions from Bharat and cuts the call. Plan B is to cook some food.Ranjeet feeds Asif an omelet and gets the address and phone number of Keval. Ranjeet gets Bharat to call Keval, using a fake name, saying that it is known that he is with Sheetal. Keval retorts that he is not with Sheetal, but with Asif's wife. Asif is horrified and vows to audit both Keval and Ranjeet and leaves in disgust.
Meanwhile Sheetal was driving around and has an accident. She is admitted to Lilawati hospital who informs Ranjeet.Now Suman arrives and Ranjeet figures out that Bharat had sent back Sheetal, Suman tells Bharat that he was called by Ranjeet to make a fool of him and have fun at his expense. This hurts Bharat, but the good at heart Bharat still wants to help Ranjeet (Sheetal calls Ranjeet and tells him not to come to the hospital) by letting Sheetal know how sorry Ranjeet is because of his acts and how much he loves her (Bharat calls Sheetal at Lilawati hospital and tells her about Ranjeet's true feelings for her) (Bharat tells her that he is calling from a PCO and Ranjeet is not in front of him making him say these things)
However, he again messes up (Sheetal calls Ranjeet on his landline and Bharat picks the phone, revealing that he is indeed sitting with Ranjeet) and the film ends on a funny note.
