A jobless youngster has to fight with criminal rivals who come to snatch away his neighborhood lady love as a bride and also his family which seems not to take note of his feelings towards the girl next door.
Gattu (Rajkummar Rao) has a problem, he loves Binny (Shruti Haasan) who lives in their neighborhood. But everyone says that the girls of the neighborhood should be treated as own sister or mother. So no one considers Gattu as a potential groom for Binny, rather gives him tasks which are usually done by a brother for his sister. Binny is also very mischievous, she is not committing to Gattu entirely. Now we have to watch how Gattu convinces both Binny and the neighborhood.—Niaz Islam Arif
Shiv / Gattu (Rajkummar Rao) & Binny Arora (Shruti Haasan) live in the same Mohalla in Lucknow. Every Rakhi, Gattu hides with his band of boys so that they are not made forced "brothers" for Mohalla girls, while Binny actively seeks them out and is a bit of a social activist. Binny forcefully captures her sister Ritu's (Reena Aggarwal) lover and converts with into a brother of Ritu (Ritu is not happy about it).
Gattu secretly loves Binny, but his parents (father Hemchander (Darshan Jariwala) and mother Mrs Nautiyal (Natasha Rastogi) don't seem to like her entire family (mother Mrs Arora (Meenakshi Sethi), elder brother Jaydev (Ninad Kamat) and younger brother Ajju).Mrs Nautiyal believes that the girls are too independent, and Ritu is infamous for having too many affairs already.Gattu tries to befriend Ajju (Bhavya Dutta) (Binny's younger brother), but he refuses to help Gattu express his love to Binny.
Suddenly Binny's Dadi (Simona) expires, and the family turns to Gattu's family for help. Gattu gets close to Binny and gets to comfort her at multiple occasions. But after the funeral, when Gattu expresses his love to Binny, she gives him a cold shoulder. Gattu had failed in 10th class, has graduated from college 2 years ago and is yet directionless in life. Binny says that she has a lot of responsibilities now that Dadi has passed away, and she even has to get Ritu married. Binny says that love requires courage.
After much persuasion, Binny agrees to test Gattu's courage by giving him audacious, silly tasks, which he completes one by one to earn her trust. Tasks include giving a Purple Nurple to a well-built weightlifter, proposing to a random girl on the riverfront, talking to Jaydev about her marriage, and so on.But Gattu does not have a job, and he even fails the UPSC exam.
One day Gattu's father Hemchander sees Binny with Gattu's best friend Bhura (Herry Tangri) on his bike. Bhura is the son of Dhappi, a famous goon who runs a milk business in Lucknow.
He thinks they are having an affair and tells Binny's elder brother Jaydev about it. Gattu is speechless when both families ask him about Binny's affair with Bhura. Thay take his silence as his acceptance of the charge. Jaydev assumes that Gattu is keeping silent due to his loyalty to Bhura. Jaydev requests Gattu to keep an eye on Binny outside of home. Jaydev and Nautiyal see Gattu as Binny's brother.Hemchander tells Jaydev to keep the matter on low key till Ritu is married, and the promises to drag Bhura to the Mohalla and get Binny to tie a Rakhi to him. Gattu is assigned to drop and pick-up Binny to college every day.
A mediator brings a wedding proposal for Ritu, but the boy's parents also like Binny for their nephew Rahul. Rahul lives in France. Jaydev agrees to the proposal under pressure as he wants to get Ritu married. Binny is angry at not being consulted but has to agree. She gets engaged. Gattu is crushed.To deal with Bhura, Jaydev invites him to a meeting and ends up slapping him and warning him to stay away from Binny. Bhura is livid at this treatment and vows to extract his revenge.
Binny loves Gattu and asks him to find a way that Ritu's wedding is not impacted and yet Binny and Gattu can be together.
To top it off, Binny's new fiance Rahul (Gautam Gulati) starts to spend a lot of time with her, which troubles Gattu no end. Gattu and Bhura get drunk. When they return home Bhura's uncle Gajender Pehalwaan (Ranjeet) confronts them. They boys blabber a story in which it seems like Bhura is crushed by Binny's engagement and wants to murder Binny or Rahul. Bharu's uncle is emotionally shaken, and the very next day gets his goons to find out the truth.
They report that the story of Bhura & Binny's romance is famous in the entire Mohalla. They also say that Jaydev slapped Bhura for dating Binny. Gajender is now livid but knows that boys from his community cannot be married outside the community. He plans to approach Jaydev and counsel him to get Binny married somewhere else.
At the meeting, Jaydev speaks first and says that he cannot wed Binny to Bhura, as Bhura's family is a known perpetrator of criminal activities in Lucknow, under their garb of being a milk supplier.Gajender makes this a matter of ego and gives an ultimatum to Jaydev that Binny should be wedded to Bhura. Jaydev is against it and refuses to agree. Jaydev threatens to call the police and the entire Mohalla unites against Gajender. This leads to a scuffle and then Bhura's dad Dhappi Chacha (Gulshan Grover) enters. The whole Mohalla is afraid of Dhappi and the matter is final.Dhappi vows to kill anyone who interferes with Bhura's wedding to Binny.
Binny cries that she has no affair with Bhura, but Ritu informs her that it is was Gattu who confirmed Binny's affair with Bhura.
Binny curses Gattu for ruining her life for getting her wedding fixed to Bhura. Meanwhile Nautiyal & Jaydev hires goons of their own to make sure Dhappi cannot interfere with Binny's wedding to Rahul. Dhappi makes Gattu point out Binny to him from afar, & instantly approves of her. Cornered from everywhere, Gattu forges a letter from Binny to Dhappi, asking him not to interfere with Ritu's wedding, post which she will run away with Gattu to marry Bhura. On the day of Binny's wedding Gattu calls the police, which makes it seem like the police is acting in connivance with Dhappi.
Jaydev panics and asks Binny to run away with Gattu till the situation settles. Matters come to a head when Dhappi is unable to reach Gattu, and neither is Jaydev. Dhappi reaches the wedding venue and threatens to stop proceedings when Gattu shows up with Binny. Gattu professes his love for Binny in front of everyone. Bhura stops Dhappi from retaliating and Rahul withdraws gracefully. Binny and Gattu run away to get married.
