Max and Willy participate in the talent show in Bannebroek with a magic act. When Max thinks he is more likely to win the main prize and the beautiful Laura without Willy, he drops his best friend. Willy disappears during the final. What does Max do? Will he choose the competition or will he search for his friend?

When the tiny Dutch tow of Bannebroek holds a talent show, gifted schoolboy Max plans to demonstrate his gift for both magic and diabolo juggling tricks in a joint act with simpleton classmate Willy. His father can't afford to buy advanced magic equipment, but finds an experienced coach. Willy is considered Max's only major handicap at the qualifying auditions, yet Max wants to keep his buddy on board, but the pressure mounts wile town-folk side with either option. As both have an eye on foxy schoolmate Laura, who would make the perfect magician's assistant, the boys fall out as Max drops Willy for her. Yet on show night, each wrestles with conflicting loyalties.—KGF Vissers
