Maharaj Brajbhan (Satyendra Kapoor) lives a wealthy lifestyle in Bharatpur, India along with his wife, Badi Rani (Indrani Mukherjee), but have been unable to conceive for Bharatpur, and have no choice but to leave it's reigns with Brajban's widowed cousin, Vikram (Utpal Dutt), and his son, Kanchan (Amjad Khan).Brajbhan had a promise with the king of Rampur Sujan Singh (Amarnath Mukherjee) that if ever he had a son, he would marry the daughter princess of Rampur.
When Vikram finds out from Badi Rani's maid Sundri (Padma Khanna) that Badi Rani is pregnant, he plots to first sully her character by having her abducted. Vikram tells Brajbhan that Badi Rani ran away with bandit Zalim Singh. Vikram leads Brajbhan to Zalim's hideout and proceeds to kill him. Zalim had realized that Badi Rani was pregnant, and that Vikram was being deceitful in duping Brajbhan. When Zalim greets Brajbhan, Vikram kills him with his sword. Before dying, Zalim Singh cuts off Vikram's foot.
Badi Rani is rescued but shunned by the Maharaj and she escapes into the jungle. She reaches a temple where the priest gives her shelter. She gives birth to a son, names him Bhola (Uttam Kumar), and starts living a simple lifestyle in a Mandir with the help of its Poojary (Shivraj).Brajbhan continues to live in the palace with Chhoti Rani (Nandita Thakur). After 6 years Chhoti Rani makes Brajbhan realize that Brajbhan did not even let Badi Rani a chance to defend herself, and judged her guilty basis the statements of Vikram.
Years later Vikram finds out Badi Rani is alive and kills her, as well the Poojary and the Poojary's son (Raju Shrestha) (believing him to be Badi Rani's son).Bhola witnesses this (while he doesn't see Vikram's face, he sees a large scar on his back and his severed foot) and manages to escape. He starts to live with a poor widow (Chandrima Bhaduri), grows up uneducated, and makes a living through crime.Ramdas (Manik Dutt) is the local money lender who robs the poor. Bhola steals from Ramdas and distributes the money to the needy.
After a heist at Ramdas' residence, he goes on the run from the Police and ends up near Bharatpur where he is forcibly taken in by Senapati Raghuvir Singh (Iftekhar) and asked to pose as his look-alike Yuvraj Uday Singh, who is a womanizer and alcoholic, has been missing for several days. Uday is Brajbhan's son from Chhoti Rani and if Uday is declared dead Kanchan (Vikram's son) will be declared King.Raghuvir & Bharatpur's Diwanji (Madan Puri) want to prevent Kanchan being crowned the Maharaj. Raghuvir searches for Uday everywhere when he comes across Bhola.Bhola was staying at a lodge owned by owner (Asit Kumar Sen). Bhola is abducted by Raghuvir and brought to the palace. Raghuvir explains the entire situation to Bhola. Chandravadan (Tarun Ghosh) is assigned as Bhola's bodyguard.
Vikram had poisoned Sundri many years ago to protect the secret behind Badi Rani's abduction. It is also revealed that Brajbhan had exiled Vikram from Bharatpur around the time Chhoti Rani was pregnant with Uday. Brajbhan gave him the palace of Vijaygarh.
Bhola agrees to this charade, meets Uday's future fiance, Rajkumari Radha (Sulakshana Pandit) of Rampur, as well as her ravishing assistant, Krishna (Prema Narayan). Now this wedding was happening only because of Radha's father promise to Brajbhan all those years ago. Radha did not want to get married without her choice as Uday is infamous.Radha runs away from her palace, as Bhola escapes the Bharatpur palace. Bhola comes across Radha in a temple. He dons the disguise of a sage and convinces Radha to return home, saying that Uday is not a bad person. Radha is astounded that Bhola knew so much about her and believes that he is telling the truth.Bhola reaches some ruins where he peeps through the window and sees a man with the same scar that was on his mother's killer. He enters the ruins but finds it empty. Bhola returns to the palace as he knows his mother's killer is nearby.
Little does Bhola know that it is Kanchan who has lured Uday, by first getting him seduced by Vimla (Bindu Desai), and is now holding him prisoner in a dungeon in the palace of Vijaygarh, has plans to kill him on his birthday, and then expose Bhola as a fraud and eventually have him killed too.Vimla is in love with Anand (Amrish Puri).
Bhola is crowned as the King of Bharatpur in front of Vikram and Kanchan. Radha is also invited to the ceremony. Kanchan had planned to drop the heavy chandelier on Bhola to kill him, but it was Radha who came under the Chandelier. Bhola acts quickly to save Radha's life.Anand was tasked to kill Bhola and Kanchan whips Anand mercilessly when he fails in his task.
Anand and Vimla meet in the forest outside the palace. Bhola was again investigating the ruins when he sees them, but they escape before he could establish their identity, but he notices the jewels worn by Vimla.Bhola then meets Radha in her room and they both fall in love with each other.
On Uday's birthday there is a celebration at the palace. Rampur sends gifts and Kanchan asks Anand to infiltrate his assassins in the procession from Rampur. The assassins emerge inside Bhola's chamber, abduct him and throw him in the river, but Bhola still manages to escape.Anand knows that Kanchan will kill him and asks Vimla to run away with him, but she refuses. Vimla says that she has amassed a lot of wealth, skimming from Vikram, to pay for their unborn child.Bhola again comes to investigate the ruins and this time finds Vimla's bracelet on the floor, which had dropped when she ran away hearing him coming.
Anand launches his attack on Bhola at the Holi festival, but Bhola is alert and thwarts him. As Anand is now captured, Kanchan intervenes and kills Anand, distressing Vimla.Diwanji sends Chandravadan to search for Uday, since the day of the wedding with Radha is coming near and they cannot allow Bhola to be married to Radha. In retaliation Vimla releases Uday from captivity. Kanchan captures Uday and also Chandravadan who had come to rescue Uday. Then Kanchan confronts Raghuvir about the reason why Chandravadan, the King's bodyguard, left his side. He contends that the real King is missing and that is whom Chandravadan was searching for. Else, Chandravadan is a traitor and deserved death.
Bhola is shaken by this incident and discloses the truth to Radha. Bhola promises Radha that he will bring Uday to her.Vikram kills Vimla for releasing Uday. Before Vimla dies, Bhola gets there and sees Vimla wearing the other matching bracelet. Vimla only says "Vijaygarh" before dying. In her hands Bhola finds a necklace that belonged to his mother.Diwanji finds the necklace and learns from Bhola that it belonged to his mother. He realizes that Bhola is the son of Badi Rani.
Bhola reaches Vijaygarh where Kanchan and kept Uday captive. Radha also follows Bhola there. Vikram escapes on a horse and Bhola follows. In the chase, Bhola realizes that Vikram has a severed foot and a scar on his back and is thus his mother's killer. Bhola gravely injures Vikram with a knife. Kanchan attacks Bhola and Vikram throws a knife at Bhola, but he pivots, and the knife kills Kanchan instead.
Uday accepts Bhola as his elder brother. But Bhola gives up his right to the Kingdom and Radha goes with Bhola.
