Nakul (Ayushmann Khurrana) is a 25-year-old working guy, and is in a stable relationship with his colleague, Renee (Sanya Malhotra). Her mother Sangeeta (Sheeba Chaddha) likes him and approves of their relationship.Sangeeta and Renee come from a sophisticated, high-class family, from a plush neighborhood. Nakul belongs to the typical Delhi middle class house, where a large family fits into a tiny house with barely any privacy. Nakul is scheduled to leave for the US sponsored by his company. Nakul is not very keen to go as he wants to stay with his family.
Nakul's father Jeetender Kaushik (Gajraj Rao) is a middle-aged man working in the Railways. His mother Priyamvada (Neena Gupta) is a typical housewife. His younger brother Gullar (Shardul Rana) is a high school student.The family drives a 13-year-old car.His grandmother (Surekha Sikri) always quarrels with Priyamvada and dominates over her son Jeetu. One day, she taunts Priyamvada, who gets upset. Jeetu consoles his wife, and they get intimate. The grandmother had said that Ravana's wife was from the same city Meerut as Priyamvada, and since Gullar was born in Meerut, he is bound to be rebellious.
19 weeks later, Priyamvada realizes she is pregnant. The doctor advises Priyamvada to decide fast in case she wants an abortion as the pregnancy has been detected very late.She finds it sinful to abort the child and Jeetu honors her decision as the final. Jeetu announces Priyamvada's third pregnancy to the family. The two sons get embarrassed and start to avoid their parents, friends and society. Their grandma is also shocked and upset. She is livid that Nakul will be bringing up his brother in the age when he should be having his own kids. She also says that the elderly couple have completely given up on social values and norms.The grandmother squarely blames Priyamvada for the slip-up. She says even her generation knew the use of contraceptives for family control.
The news becomes viral, and they are made fun of by family, friends, relatives, and society. Nakul begins to avoid Renee. The news spread in the colony and the reactions range from humor to ridicule for the family.Renee reaches Nakul's home to meet him, and she realizes that Priyamvada is pregnant. Renee finds the whole things funny.
Jeetu and Priyamvada ask Nakul and Gullar to accompany them to Meerut for their cousin's wedding. Both of them refuse by making excuses. This makes Jeetu angry at them and he leaves with his wife and mother.
Meanwhile, Renee offers a room-date to cheer Nakul up. But he is unable to get intimate with her as it reminds him of his mom's pregnancy. Renee tries to counsel Nakul that having sex in a marriage in normal and she hope that they are also having sex in their 40's and 50's. She argues that a typical Indian man puts his mother on a pedestal and forgets that she is a wife, as well as a woman.Sangeeta gets to know about Nakul's mom's pregnancy from Renee. She is shocked that Nakul's parents are so careless and speaks ill about the Kaushik family. She says that the entire financial burden of the pregnancy will fall on Nakul and then on Renee.Nakul overhears this as he was standing outside the room and behaves rudely with Sangeeta and breaks up with Renee. Nakul says that he has realized that he was not a good son to his parents as else he would be standing with them.
In Meerut, Kaushik's elder sister-in-law and sister talk harshly with Priyamvada for her late pregnancy. Meanwhile, Jeetu is considered a stud by the guys for making his wife pregnant at this age.First time his mother defends her daughter-in-law for her dutifulness and makes them realize their selfishness and mean attitude towards her. She says that Priyamvada is the only person who takes care of her, and none among her daughter and daughter-in-law came to see her when she was admitted to the hospital.Grandmother says that Priyamvada is more family oriented than anyone, as she keeps quiet for the sake of family.
Gullar reveals to Nakul that some boys made fun of his mom's pregnancy at school and when he responded to them, one of them hit him. Nakul goes to the school the next day and Gullar slaps the boy thrice. Nakul meets own friends and when one of them taunts him, he gives a befitting reply. Nakul says that for them, even his old father is enough.He reconciles with his parents and begins to fulfill his duties as a son. Priyamvada realizes that Nakul has had a breakup with Renee, and she tells him to apologize to Renee's mother. Nakul reluctantly agrees. Nakul apologizes to Sangeeta and invites her to his mother's baby shower.
As the baby shower preparations begin, Priyamvada goes into labor pain and is immediately taken to the hospital. Sangeeta tells Renee about Nakul's apology and also that she has forgiven Nakul. Renee rushes to Nakul's home and then to the hospital. After the delivery, the doctor announces the birth of a baby girl.After 15 months, Nakul and Renee get engaged.
