The story of the film takes place in the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve in 1899, and its setting is an international peace conference with the mission to welcome the new century and define it as a century of peace. The love story of the daughter of the Austro-Hungarian ambassador Vilma and Zoluk from Montenegro unfolds against the background of historical events. Their tragic fate seemed to foreshadow what the 20th century would be like, the proverbial "century of peace".
