The adventures of captain Mihály Tímár, who aids a persecuted Turkish Pasha and his daughter, Tíméa in their escape on the Danube. After the Pasha dies, the captain acquires his fortune and becomes a well regarded gentleman. Seeing how the Pasha's friend and his family mistreat Timéa he purposefully tricks the man into financial ruin and buys his house in the aftermath. Tíméa marries him out of gratitude. She remains faithful but distant to Tímár. During his passage on the Danube, Tímár met Noémi, a girl living on an island with her mother. Tímár decides to go back to this island because he grows tired of his unfulfilling marriage. He and Noémi eventually fall in love and have a child.
