An ambitious lawyer uses circumstantial evidence to help convict an innocent man then tries to make amends with his family.

Burton is a brilliant, albeit self-seeking prosecution attorney who, having sent an innocent man, Wallace (Dwight Frye), to his death is filled with remorse and resigns and becomes a crusading defense attorney.
