The film follows residents of a home for the severely disabled people at the edge of Kiel Fjord over a year. But the film entirely eschews pity or pathos. Instead, we see people going about their daily business, with an enigmatic sense of humour and home-made music. From work to leisure, from childhood to growing up, and from theoretical ideals to preposterous attempts at inclusiveness, the film bears witness to the residents in every phase of life. Yara Traeger needs her parents' help to tell her story. Ruth Krokowski watches her mother grow old. Gunnar Lenz is a born actor. And adventuresome Justus Reichhelm may have to go to jail. Sonja Lehnhardt and Gerd Staak along with jazz musicians from Kiel provide the film music, and in the end, it all comes out in the wash - "special" is normal and the normality of the home's residents is special.
