A right-wing party loyalist poses as a domestic, sent to spy on Hollywood actress Ava Gardner during her wild stay in Madrid in the early 1960s.
In 1961 Madrid, Ana Mari is a Franco follower and an instructor in the Female Section. On Franco's orders she starts to work as a maid in actress Ava Gardner's home with a mission to spy on her; she must pretend to be married to hustler Manolo, who will become Gardner's chauffeur. Manolo tries to take advantage of his position for his dodgy dealings with gypsy clans, and ends up involving Ana Mari and her schizophrenic brother, Floren; this gradually leads to an intimate relationship between them. With young maid Pilar they will serve at the endless parties Gardner and her circle enjoy in the Dolce Vita reserved for the Madrid elite, parties that create growing tensions with her downstairs neighbors: General y Senora Perón, recently exiled from Argentina.
In Franco's Madrid in the early 1960s, Ana Mari is a loyal, conservative soul who teaches young ladies how to be good homemakers and mothers, so when she's asked to work at Ava Gardner's to spy on her for the government, she doesn't think twice. However, she and Ava's chauffeur Manolo must pose as marrieds, and Manolo is Ana's exact opposite: a happy-go-lucky wheeler/dealer always trying to make a buck on the side; plus, Ava's liberal lifestyle is the exact opposite of Ana's own moral code. Thus, Ana Mari is in for quite a ride; whether it's the Hollywood megastar's all-night parties robbing their neighbor, Argentinian dictator Juan Perón, of his cherished sleep, or bringing a wasted Ava back to life after nights danced away with the local Dolce Vita crowd at Madrid's hippest clubs. In all the turmoil, Ana Mari barely notices how she herself is changing and actually beginning to fall for that crazy, lightheaded Manolo.—Beta Film
