Antal Novák lives in Sárszeg with his daughter Hilda. Mr Novák teaches mathematics and physics at the local high school. He has a lot of problems with his students who are about to graduate, especially the worst student, Vili Liszner. He is also very upset by Hilda who lies to him, and on one occasion he catches a glimpse of the best student in his class, Tibor, jumping out of his daughter's window.
