Set in the Chinese Cultural Revolution period, in Northwest China. Old Xing lives all on his own, with his big yellow dog day by day. One day, an ecdemic woman comes with a group of famine victim. Virtuous Xing takes her in and gets a feeling of "family". After conversations, Xing knows that the woman comes from a plentiful village family and has mother and child at home. The woman agrees to stay because of Xing's continuous persuasion. The woman receives a sudden family letter after days of living together, and leaves when Xing stays out of home. Xing becomes lonely again. He stays with his big yellow dog and waits for the woman to come back.
