On the outskirts of Tokyo there is a small, climate-controlled vault containing hundreds of artworks by Shinjo Ito, the most prolific Japanese Buddhist artist of the 21st century. Although experts regard these pieces as some of the best examples of Japanese art, the artist and his work had remained virtually unknown for almost 100 years. But everything would change in 2007, when a team was assembled to create the first international exhibition of his works. An Artist's Journey follows Shinjo Ito's life and art from his birthplace in rural Japan to the first public display of his work in New York City, and reveals the challenges of presenting the work of this unknown artist to an audience that was unfamiliar with Japanese and Buddhist cultures.—Anonymous
