Alternatives concerns Mark Davis, a history teacher who finds himself bouncing from one alternate earth to another, with history somewhat different on each earth he finds himself on. In Part 1, he meets a "fellow traveler", Eleanor Barnes, on an earth where it's still 1959 but a rather different 1959 than the one that occurred historically on our earth. In Part 2, they head to yet another earth where a fascist dictator is now "President" of the United States. Eleanor also turns out to not quite be what she seems to be. And they meet the denizen of another earth where lizards rather than mammals evolved into sentient beings. In Part 3 they experience two warring realities, one where a military dictatorship rules America, the other where a United African Federation was created in 1918.
