A statue in a town's square narrates to a journalist the story of 9th standard-failed, unemployed, trouble-maker and stutterer Premshankar Sharma. Premshankar cons Mr. Pinto into buying a dilapidated flat to pay for expenses of the Happy Club over which he presides, much to the disapproval of his restaurateur father Shivshankar, who wants him to wed Shakuntala Mishra. Premshankar's life undergoes many changes after he falls in love with Pinto's adopted daughter Jenny. He believes that she also loves him, and even helps her to elope after her parents force her to wed wealthy Tony. Synopsis

Premshankar 'Prem' S. Sharma (Ranbir Kapoor) is a free-loader in a small town. He runs a "Happy Club" with his vagabond friends & helps them with their random issues. The club includes David (Khurshed Lawyer), Kunnan (Akul Tripathi), Raju (Shyam Mashalkar) & Lakhan.

While helping his friend Chander (Vishwanath Chatterjee) elope, he meets Jenny (Katrina Kaif), but she dislikes him because she thinks that Prem was trying to kidnap her, when it was only a case of mistaken identity. Prem was trying to take away Chander's girlfriend Devi as she was protected by her bodyguards, but Prem did not recognize Devi and mistook Jenny as Devi.Prem is the son of Shivshankar (Darshan Jariwala) who runs a small cafe in the city. Sharda (Smita Jaykar) is Prem's mother.

Jenny is the daughter of Mr Pinto (Mithilesh Chaturvedi) and Mrs Pinto (Navneet Nishan). Jenny comes across Prem again when Prem fools Mr Pinto into leasing a bad apartment, for the sake of a rental commission, to help pay his bills.Later Jenny finds out that Prem helped a girl escape her evil husband who used to beat her & reunite her with Chander who loves her. Jenny respects Prem. Mr and Mrs Pinto don't like Prem. It is also revealed that Jenny is an orphan and Mr and Mrs Pinto don't particularly like Jenny either. Daisy (Varsha Lalwani) & Monty are their real kids.

When Jenny finds out that Prem stammers like her, the two become friends. Prem secretly harbors feelings for Jenny, but knows that they are incompatible. She is educated and a librarian, he is a duffer, she is a non-veg he is a pure veg. Prem makes a lot of effort to woo Jenny, he starts eating non-veg & even gets a regular job at a Sweets shop.Turns out Jenny is a pure vegetarian and hates non-veg food.When he tries to tell Jenny his feelings, he finds out that Jenny is in love with her college friend Rahul (Upen Patel). She also says that her parents are forcing her to marry Tony who is the son of her father's friend.On her wedding day to Tony, Prem helps Jenny escape to help her elope with Rahul.

Prem then meets Rahul and finds out that Rahul loves Jenny more than his family.Prem helps them board a train to escape. However, Rahul disappears at the train station, and Jenny returns to Prem so Prem can help her find Rahul. Prem smuggles Jenny into his own house with the knowledge of his mother, till the time he can find Rahul.Rahul's father Pitambar Jalan (Govind Namdeo) is a local MLA & is fighting for an upcoming election. Rahul is a Hindu & his marriage to a Christian Jenny will destroy his father's political career. Rahul's dad's henchmen see Rahul on the train station with Jenny & kidnap him & take him home. Rahul's dad then puts Rahul under house arrest.

Sajid (Zakir Hussain) is a don who is demands Rs 10 Crores from Pitambar.When Prem goes to Rahul's house, Rahul's father send him away threatening them with dire consequences if Prem tries to unite Jenny & Rahul. After that, Jenny's parents bring police to Prem's house to reclaim Jenny. Jenny tells police that she ran away as her parents were forcing her to marry Tony. Jenny lies to the police, claiming that she and Prem are in love to save Rahul's name.

Prem then plots with his happy club to kidnap Rahul when his dad throws a birthday party for him at the club. Jenny is very happy to be reunited with Rahul. Prem blackmails Rahul's dad with media exposure & gets him to agree to Jenny & Rahul's wedding.But the day before the wedding, Jenny is kidnapped by Sajid and his goons. They demand Rs 10 Crores to release Jenny. Rahul refuses to help Prem, so Prem rescues Jenny all by himself along with his Happy club gang.However, on Jenny and Rahul's wedding day, Jenny realizes that she made a mistake. She realizes that she truly loves Prem and that Rahul and his family are actually very selfish. She is united with Prem and the two happily get married.
