A woman goes on the hunt for her dream man, armed with her wild imagination, her passion for Masala-films, and her ultra-sensitive sense of smell.
Wildly imaginative and film-obsessed Meenakshi Deshpande has an extra-sensitive nose. After she is hired to work in a local college's library, she catches a wonderful scent in the air. The source is Surya, a handsome and enigmatic art student from a Tamil family. Meanwhile, Meenakshi's eccentric Marathi family has arranged for her marriage to Madhav, a kind and sensible man. Meenakshi is torn between marrying her parents' choice for a seemingly ideal husband, or following her nose and chasing the hunky stranger who may or may not be all that he seems.—L. Hamre
A Marathi girl Meenakshi (Rani Mukerji) falls in love with a Tamil artist Surya (Prithviraj Sukumaran). She has five members in her family (including her): A wheelchair bound grandmother (Jyoti Subhash) who is blind and has gold teeth, her father (Satish Alekar) who smokes four cigarettes together, her mother Savitri (Nirmiti Sawant) who is obsessed with marriage, and her brother Nana (Amey Wagh) whose only love in life is dogs. Nana could not pass 10th class but cannot bear the suffering of dogs and has adopted 4 of them (Chandi, Sona, Dilbar, Janeman).
To add to her misery the government garbage bin for the entire colony is placed right in front of her home. To escape the craziness of her family, Meenakshi lives her life in dreams, and in her dreams the only thing she's doing is dancing and enacting movies scenes of her favorite actresses: Madhuri, Sridevi, Juhi etc. Unfortunately, all her dreams are interrupted by nightmare of garbage trucks cornering her and disgusting her with their awful stench. To get away from her family, Meenakshi looks for a job. She becomes a librarian at a local Shree Ramswami Dhurandhar College of Arts.
Due to the garbage heap in front of her house, she has a morbid fascination for anything that smells good and a disgust for anything that smells bad. Then there is Maina or "Gaga Bai"(Anita Date), her colleague at the library, an eccentric woman who dresses up in weird ensembles inspired by pop star Lady Gaga. Meenakshi finds a stinking toilet next to the library and shuts it down. She tells Maina that the job is important for her, as for Meenakshi, the job means money and freedom.
Meenakshi's family is looking for a suitable groom but Meenakshi, who doesn't believe in arranged marriages, is waiting for her prince and wants her dream wedding. Failing that she wants to elope with the man of her dreams after stealing all the jewels in the house. The family has given a matrimonial advertisement in the local newspaper. The family promises 30 grams of Gold and the gold teeth of Meenakshi's grandmother in dowry. Despite this, either Meenakshi doesn't like the guy or the guy's family doesn't like Meenakshi. Many prospective grooms come and go, without any match.
That's when Surya enters. Surya is an art student at the college where Meenakshi has an administrative job at the library, and the moment Meenakshi looks at him she falls in love with his tanned skin and a mysterious fragrance emanating from him. From that day on, Meenakshi does not mind the garbage heap in front of her house, or its stench, as she is lost in her thoughts of Surya.
Pakkada Pandi (Pakkada Pandi) is the odd jobs boy at campus who provides tea to faculty and students.Meenaskhi learns from Maina and Pakkada that Surya is an alcoholic & a drug addict. Maina says that Surya's father died due while repaying the excessive debt incurred due to Surya's drinking problem. Meenakshi sees Surya sleeping in the college campus early in the morning, giving credence to Maina's allegations. Maina says that artists typically have to do alcohol and drugs to build a persona around themselves to sell their paintings.Pakkada says that artists have to take drugs to be able to imagine things that others simply can't. Maina alleges that Surya's is a gold medal winner, and his work is chosen for exhibitions due to his connections. Meenakshi takes Pakkada's help to learn Tamil.
They generally discourage her from having contact with a "Madrasi". Meenakshi doesn't believe that Surya is a drug addict, so she seeks out the only drug dealer in the city & waits in hiding for Surya to show up. Surya never shows up to buy drugs.
By this time her family have found the 'right guy' Madhav (Subodh Bhave) for her and are rushing with her wedding. Madhav had come to see Meenakshi with his parents, and despite her aloofness, they all loved Meenakshi and confirm the match. The engagement is in 15 days and the wedding in 2 months.Madhav runs around after Meenakshi trying to impress her, but Meenakshi follows Surya. Madhav wants to know if Meenakshi also likes him, but she is non-committal. Madhav tries to connect with Meenakshi by trying to find common interests and hobbies between them. But they are opposite to each other. Madhav is demure, realistic and mature, while Meenakshi is wild, exuberant and a dreamer. Madhav is a fan of Deepti Naval and Meenakshi has never even heard of her. Madhav can sense from Meenakshi's lack of response that she is not super interested in him, and yet maintains his calm and composure.
Meenakshi goes to Surya's home & meets his mother (Kishori Ballal) & introduces herself as an orphan and a Saree salesperson. Meenakshi learns that even Surya's mother is worried about his wedding and believes that no decent girl would like to have Surya as her life partner.
The date of her engagement with Madhav is nearing, but Meenakshi can't think of anything or anyone other than Surya. Madhav is very nice to Meenakshi & respects her a lot. But Meenakshi simply can't bring herself to have any sort of feelings for Madhav as he smells absolutely normal.
Meanwhile Surya is completely oblivious to Meenakshi's passion & obsession for him. Nana gets engaged to Maina under bizarre circumstances when Meenakshi goes missing on her engagement date when she actually was following Surya and ends up in his fragrance sticks'(Agarbatti) factory.
Surya finally opens up to Meenakshi upon finding her in the Agarbatti factory. He says that his mother wants him to manage the factory, but his passion is his art. Thats why he attends college in day, paints in evening & manages the factory at night (and comes to sleep at the college campus after finishing work at the factory).
Meenakshi learns that Surya's odor that she got enthralled to was actually because of his involvement in the Agarbatti factory. In the end, Meenakshi eventually succeeds in winning over Surya's heart and they get engaged in a traditional Maharashtrian ceremony.
