A story of love and intolerance in the Brazilian hinterlands.
Etevaldo (Aury Porto), a nomadic rural worker, guards a secret. He meets Maria (Badu Morais), a young and free-spirited woman whose family has promised in marriage. They fall in love and escape. Exhausted during the run, they are rescued by Valda (Luci Pereira), a religious lady who offers them shelter. Valda sees Maria as her daughter. When Valda's nephew and cop Ribamar (Jaedson Bahia) appears investigating a kidnapping, his threats and attraction to Maria spur the couple to flee. The cop's investigations reveal a secret, raising the community's hatred.—Gustavo Maximiliano
