In Chile, a group of travelers who are in an underground nightclub when a massive earthquake hits quickly learn that reaching the surface is just the beginning of their nightmare.

In Santiago, the American Gringo is spending vacation with his Chilean friends Ariel and the wealthy and influent Pollo. They meet the Russian tourists Irina, the promiscuous Kylie and her protective sister Monica and Pollo invites them to go with his friends and him to Valparaiso. During the night, they go to a nightclub but an earthquake collapses the club and there is a warning of tsunami. The group tries to find a safe place in the middle of the chaos. Meanwhile a nearby prison also collapses and dangerous criminals escape. Three travelers, Gringo, Ariel, and Pollo were traveling through Chile. They went partying in a club and met three young women, sisters Monica and Kylie, and their Russian friend Irina. The two groups paired up and decided to travel down to Valparaiso together. As they were partying in another club at Valparaiso, an earthquake struck, killing a lot of people and trapping some under debris. Ariel's hand was cut off as he tried to help a trapped bartender. The group tried to get out, but their exit was blocked by more falling debris.
The cleaning lady of the club led them through a tunnel to a nearby manhole. As they proceeded to climb out, a passing truck hit the old lady and killed her. Once out on the street, the group tried to get to their car but found it destroyed. Ariel's condition continued to get worse due to blood loss and the group decided that they needed to get him to the hospital on top of the hill as soon as possible.
Suddenly, a tsunami warning was heard, and they all rushed to the cart going up the hill. After some negotiation, they were able to get Ariel on the cart with other people in line. The group watched the cart reached the top of the hill when an aftershock suddenly occurred, causing the cart to fall all way back down, destroying the cable and killing everyone inside.
After mourning the death of their friend, the group head toward the cemetery, trying to reach the cathedral at the top of the hill through a previously mentioned hidden tunnel. The group came upon a looting party on the street which turned out to be escaped prisoners from a nearby prison that was damaged during the earthquake. They tried to run past, but the women of the group attracted some attention. While running away, part of a building fell on top of Gringo and pinning him in place. Still alive and conscious, Monica and Pollo left to get help while Irina and Kylie stayed with Gringo.
While they were seeking help, Monica and Pollo came across an out-of-control firetruck. The truck crashed and one of the firefighters in the cab was ran through by wooden beams while the other one was trapped. Pollo and Monica got the living firefighter out, who explained that some prisoners were trying to take over the fire truck which was why it went out of control.
Meanwhile, as Irina was trying to comfort the seriously injured Gringo, Kylie heard the prisoners approaching. Gringo told Kylie and Irina to hide, reasoning that they would only take his money. The women hid in the tombs while the prisoners threatened Gringo. They poured alcohol on him, threatening to light him up if he didn't tell them where the women were. Frightened, Irina crawled out of her hiding place and tried to run away. She was quickly captured by the prisoners.
The leader of the prisoners sexually assaulted Irina while the rest of the gang sat around telling jokes. Gringo threw a rock at the leader, trying to stop him from continuing sexually assaulting Irina. The leader, enraged, lit him up and burned him alive, killing him. Kylie, hearing all the chaos outside decided to run.
The group went after her, but the leader's brother stayed behind to continue sexually assaulting Irina. Kylie was able to run away, bumping into Monica and the others. They went back for Irina and Pollo axed the leader's brother to death. Just as the group was about to run, the prisoners returned, the leader saw the dead body of his brother and fired at them, killing Irina. The rest of the group managed to escape and came across a gated building with other survivors who lived there. A single mother did not want to let them through, but her neighbor wanted to open the gate. As Pollo begged, the woman shot him in the chest injuring him. The others helped carry him away but decided to hide him so they could go get help.
Pollo's phone suddenly rang and one of the prisoners heard it and found him. They killed him and continue to go after the others. The group finally arrived at the cathedral where they were saved by a priest who shut the door just in time. As another aftershock hit, the Cathedral began to fall apart. The priest led them to a secret passage inside the cathedral. As the group descended a ladder through the secret passage, another aftershock shook the ladder off. The priest fell off in the process to his death, and Kylie fell on top of a metal object that pierced her thigh. Monica, meanwhile, was stranded at the top alone as she was the last to go down the ladder.
The firefighter attempted to help Kylie by removing the object and took off his own coat to try to stop the bleeding. Taking off his coat revealed the prison tattoos on his arms and shoulders. He turned out to be one of the escaped prisoners who was taking over the fire truck, Kylie panicked and promised that she would not tell anyone. Monica was able to find some ropes and went down the ladder shaft to an empty landing. She found Kylie's body in one of the tunnels. The fake firefighter/ prisoner then tried to kill her, but an aftershock occurred and Monica was able to kill him with the ax instead.
Monica finally managed to escape through the tunnel and onto a beach. She walked around the beach, bewildered that she was able to escape to safety at last. As she turned around, she saw a tsunami rushing toward her.
