Love, motherhood and a musical career strike dissonant chords in this dark tale of a young Russian woman who tries to keep her balance among wealthy French expats in New York.
Just before reaching the pinnacle of fame and freshly arrived in New York from Russia, Veronica happily gives up her career as a pianist to raise her son. Despite constant pressures from her husband Paul, a French stockbroker, she retreats into an indefinite hiatus from performing while fully enjoying her role as a mother. But without a salary or an independent work identity, Veronica's dependency on Paul grows and a sense of personal dislocation sets in. The question of going back on stage arises more painfully when she meets Amanda, an alluring, promising, and younger pianist from Paris, who soon falls for Paul.
According to her is a drama following Veronica (Irina Abraham), a young Russian woman just arrived in New York, who happily gives up all prospects of a brilliant career as a pianist in order to raise her son. Initially supported in this decision by her husband Paul (Pascal Yen-Pfister), an ambitious stockbroker, Veronica is unaware of the consequences her choice will have.
Pauls cousin, Adele (Nathalie Bryant), who as a French bourgeoise exudes a kind of highbrow affectation that charms more than it alienates, is the storm that threatens to uproot Veronica. A high-end executive with a brilliant career and a child at a distant boarding school, Adele rages against Veronicas choice and shakes up everything and everybody in the airtight wealthy French expatriate milieu in which the film takes place.
The situation intensifies when Amanda (Eloise Eonnet), a competitive but charming French pianist, arrives for a concert tour in New York and falls for Paul.
