In the heart of the Netherlands, just 20 miles from Amsterdam, nature sets the pace in a 6,000-hectare reserve, home to thousands of wild horses, wild cattle, red deer, and red foxes living a unique life. The landscape evokes a prehistoric European savannah more than modern-day Netherlands. The story begins on a sunny spring day when a fox emerges from the darkness of her den on land that was submerged under the sea only a few decades ago.
Through the seasons, Hunter, Red and Scar embark on their quests. Born to the same mother, they venture into the reserve to carve out their own territories and navigate the challenges of becoming adult foxes. Winter brings the drive to find their first mates, and once found, courtship strengthens their bonds as they search for suitable den sites. In spring, large flocks of geese provides an abundance of food, but hunting them takes practice. In summer, after the worst drought in recent Dutch history, Scar becomes familiar with the swamp, learning to survive off the land he was born on while adapting to the shifting climate. In autumn, the red deer rut claims many large herbivores creating Serengeti-like scenes in the Netherlands with red foxes as top scavenger.
When they finally give birth to their new families, Hunter's tenderness and courage in nurturing and raising her cubs are shown in extraordinarily intimate moments. Red also shows his important duties as father fox and takes the cubs under his wing, demonstrating his paternal tenderness.
The foxes provide a unique opportunity to delve into their minds and lives, offering an intimate glimpse into their authentic and natural behaviour, often unseen during the day, through their journeys, adventures, and challenges in their wild fox life.
