Synopsis

Mother, father, wife, fiancée, aunt, uncle, sister, brother-in-law. Each has lost their soldier in Iraq. For members of the military, there are hospitals to treat the wounded, programs to assist reentry, and an armed forces community to rejoin. But, for those who have lost their soldier, the military connection itself is threatened.

They are a community in grief, in pain and unsure how to carry on with their lives. They gather to recognize self-sacrifice and duty, to support each other and just remember. It is not about policy, political conduct or debate. They are brought together by their loss.

They share 'A Painful Pride.' With heartfelt support and gentle guidance, the love offered by former strangers enables these family members and friends to slowly move forward.

This film documents a military support group of these 'survivors,' organized by the nonprofit Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors. The footage is heartbreaking, powerful and significant. The participants include two wives, a fiance, three sisters, a mother, a father, an aunt, uncle, and a brother-in-law, gathered at the historic Seventh Regiment Armory in New York City.
