Synopsis

It is the late 1980's. Dayne Thomas, a struggling writer/surfer, is stuck in an uninspiring loop that leaves him blocked. His childhood friend and surf idol suddenly resurfaces in their hometown of Santa Cruz after being thought dead. This would be Lance Pearson, a free-spirited mystic that mysteriously disappeared from the professional surf tour. He shows up briefly and leaves his cherished surf boards for Dayne with a note that leaves more questions than answers. Dayne is haunted by his friend's second disappearance. Despite not knowing Lance's destination and only having a torn-up postcard as a clue, Dayne decides to embark on a journey to seek out his illusive best friend and return his treasured boards.

Dayne eventually finds Lance, and to his shock, discovers he is dying of AIDS. The reunion is bittersweet, as Lance confesses his fears about coming out and the secret life he had to lead. Dayne struggles with feelings of betrayal but begins to understand Lance's pain. Lance pushes Dayne to break free of his creative block, and they share a spontaneous adventure. This allows them to relive the joy of their childhood friendship by surfing sand dunes. As his final moments approach, Lance performs a Native American-inspired tobacco ritual, expressing gratitude and love. Dayne initially protests Lance's choice for assisted suicide, but eventually comes to terms with his friend's decision.

After Lance's passing, Dayne returns home to face his ultimate challenge at Ghost Trees, a mythical surf spot. Paddling out to a massive wave, Dayne is nearly overwhelmed but finds the strength to survive, feeling Lance's spirit guiding him. Though he doesn't conquer the wave, the experience profoundly changes him. Inspired by his friend's courage, Dayne embraces a life of passion, empathy, and creative flow; following the path of The Tao.
