Carolyn Giblin (Connie Sellecca) moves from LA with her daughter Jordy (Asia Vieira) after her divorce for Carolyn's rural childhood village in Mayville, South Carolina. Carolyn heads east without a job as a therapist and intends to write novels for a living while living off her bank savings. Carolyn and Jordy drive between coasts to arrive at grandmother's old, run down house which needs many repairs so it won't be condemned. Jordy isn't happy with the move since there's no shopping mall nor cable TV available in Mayville. With nothing of interest for the daughter, Carolyn talks Jordy into a walk into the forest where they end up at the nearest neighbor's home. Carolyn meets her former fiance, Clay (Randy Travis), who she left at the altar many years prior and they wrestle with their past/present feelings for each other. Both Carolyn and Jordy befriend Clay's aunt, Miz Leona (Rue McClanahan), and find some local support through her. Carolyn also finds a lost boy, William (Kyle Fairlie), plus his dog Traveler, who she immediately wants to help. Carolyn talks William into staying but he steals a chocolate pie from Miz Leona, some silverware from Carolyn and music tapes from Jordy. Once Miz Leona finds out William stole her pie, she immediately takes William and Jordy to church where they get involved a Christmas play performance.
Clay is the local police, part-time handyman and Mayville's mayor. Clay informs his social worker girlfriend, Eve Stevens (Brenda Bazinet), of William's situation and she places William first in a shelter (with Traveler in a kennel) and later in a foster home on Christmas eve; William runs away from both environments. There is a love triangle between Clay, Eve and Carolyn; Eve is very divisive throughout and feels threatened by Carolyn's recent appearance within Mayville. Clay finds William on Christmas morning and drops him with Traveler (plus her new puppy) back with Carolyn. Clay promised to spend Christmas with Eve but breaks that off early. William prays openly that Carolyn and Clay marry so he can have a happy, intact future home with them. Clay arrives moments later to propose to Carolyn after dumping Eve on Christmas day.
