Synopsis

Derek Lane (Luke Bote) is a new junior student at Faith High School, the youngest of five brothers and the son of the new plant manager at New Kingdom Wool and Fabrics. Derek is a quarterback, but his father is not confident he will have much of a role on Faith High's football team. Emma Scott (Hannah Thomas) is a shy ballet dancer who was raised by her grandfather and is trying to get into a prestigious ballet academy. Kyle Quade is the self-absorbed starting quarterback Alexis Silvestri is the pretentious head cheerleader. The narrator making a documentary of the year is Faye Triggs (Ashley Wright) who is Emma's best friend and girlfriend of Jason Quade, Kyle's brother.On the first day if school, Kyle and his buddies are already terrorizing the freshmen and Alexis, whose cheer group is competing at nationals without Emma, is already campaigning for homecoming Queen. On morning announcements, the principal announces the homecoming theme will be '80's movies. In Coach Simms Junior Bible class, Derek is without an assigned seat and ends up sitting next to Emma.The cheer team works hard to perfect their routine, but the team realizes they are not quite the same without Emma, a name Alexis instructs them to forget. The football assistant coach learns his backup quarterback Derek has a big arm by accident. Derek is waiting on his father for a ride home when Emma's truck fails to start. Derek fixes it and is about get a ride home with Emma, when Derek s father arrives. As Emma drives off, Derek's father assures Derek that Emma is way out of his league.The first football game of the season is being played. The Modoc Valley Titans are crushing the Faith Eagles at half-time. Kyle Quade claims he has an ankle injury and refuses to return to the game. Derek replaces him. On the first play Derek decks the Titans loudmouth linebacker with a throw that sticks in his helmet. Late in the game, trailing 20-24, the Eagles recover a fumble. Derek throws the game winning pass touchdown pass as time expires.After the game, Derek's dad calls that he missed the game because his brothers called. Derek goes to a party at Alexis's house with a teammate. He fends off the flirtation of Alexis by talking about spiders. Emma accidentally smacks Derek in the face as he is making his way through the dance floor and hurts her hand. Derek gets her some ice. When retrieves them a soda, Kyle makes it seem like Emma is with him. Emma sees Alexis kissing Derek on the cheek. The misunderstanding is quickly cleared up and Emma and Derek become closer.Emma learns she has earned her dance audition. At lunch, Faye questions Derek's intentions with her best friend. Kyle knocks a pudding out of a freshman hand that lands on Alexis expensive blouse. The coach calls Derek in his office to tell him he is naming him the starting quarterback and instructs him he is to be a king among the warriors. Emma video chats her grandfather to tell him she has qualified to audition for the Ivan Kosovich Dance Academy. She shows Derek the letter in the parking lot as he leaves football practice. Derek suggests they celebrate by going out for coffee, a date which Faye and her boyfriend Jason quickly invite themselves along. Emma's truck fails to start, and Derek and Jason again repair her battery cables.The next morning, Office Assistant Johnson shows Principal Kuper a school prank of him declaring himself the king of the bathroom. Emma tries to add a move to her dance sequence and her coach is highly critical of her ability to pull it off. Derek sees the exchange and encourages Emma to do the move. He offers to help her train to get stronger. Meanwhile, the football team improves from 5-0 record to 9-0 as Derek proves to be a positive leader of the team. Kyle betrays the team by giving his play book to the Titans coach and transfers to Modoc Valley. Derek and Emma become a couple. Both Emma's grandfather and Derek's parents feel the need to have an awkward sex talks with Emma and Derek.At school the next day, Jason delivers the news to Derek that Kyle transferred schools. That days, the coach assigns the class their Bible projects where students are asked to prepare presentations for the class on various Biblical themes they have drawn from slips of paper in a hat. Alexis draws "Love or Lust" and immediately focuses on Derek who has a topic dealing with temptation. Alexis proposed that they hook up on the project when they are studying in the library. Alexis kisses Derek just as Emma enters the library. Emma flees. Derek follows behind her and Emma falls down the stairs injuring her ankle not long before her audition. Derek drives Emma home and tries to explain to her grandfather what happened. When Derek gets home, his parents demand an explanation and are skeptical that Derek was not a participant in the kiss. Derek blows up and questions his constant comparison to his brothers. Derek visits Emma at her home and helps Emma understand Alexis's evil motivation. At school, Alexis tries again to make Emma jealous, but Emma tells her she is pathetic, and her popularity is at risk if she does not improve the way she treats people.At her dance audition, Emma covers in the bathroom until Derek slips her his cellphone with her grandfather on FaceTime who gives her a pep talk. Emma dances beautifully and Ivan compliments her as the only dancer willing to take risks and personally invites her into the dance academy. Derek secretly shows her grandfather the entire episode with his cellphone.Alexis arrives at cheer practice and is told the team has revolted and got the coach to agree that Alexis is to be removed from being captain and booted from the team for the way she was treating her fellow cheerleaders. Alexis cries in humiliation.The Eagle football team is facing the Titans for the league championship in the final game of the season. Derek discovers that the Titan defense is reading the plays the coach is signaling in. Meanwhile Titans quarterback Kyle Quade is tearing apart the Eagle defense. At half-time the coaches theorize that Coach Ricks of the Titans has their play book. Derek suggests that they "go playground" and make up plays as they go, passing out of running sets and running out of passing sets. Derek's parents arrive at halftime and Derek is happy they finally came to a game. Principal Kuper joins the body painted fans with his self-created T-shirt. The first play the Eagles have the ball, they let the loudmouth linebacker come through the line, but this time Derek throws a touchdown pass. With seconds left in the game, Kyle's incomplete pass forces the Titans to punt. The Eagles take over 80 yards away from a game winning score. Derek completes a series of short passes before getting his best receiver on a long post after a pass fake. On the game's final play, the half back completes a pass to Derek who had flanked out for the winning touchdown. The fans storm the field. Derek's coach and parents are proud of Derek.At the 80s movies themed homecoming dance, Derek and Alexis are names homecoming king and queen. Alexis is gracious in victory, apologizes to Derek and Emma for the way she treated them and shows more respect for her former cheerleader teammates. Faye Triggs presents her Bible project on how the Bible is relevant in the world today show how the stories and characters relate to her experiences in high school.
