Martha Evans has been abandoned by her husband, who took all their cash and left her homeless and virtually destitute with her stepson and two daughters. Martha leaves town hoping to find a job and a place to stay, and she finally finds a job at a sleepy rural diner once famous for its homemade root beer. But with her car broken down and the bills piling up, Christmas looks bleak for Martha and her family.
