Mayanagar is a three Storey Chawl in Mumbai.Flory Mendonca (Renuka Shahane) a Catholic widow wants to give away a part of her house but doesn't have buyers due to its high price. The market price for a Chawl flat is 20 Lakhs, but Flory is asking Rs 80 Lakhs for it.
Finally, Vilas (Pulkit Samrat) who is eager to take a house near station buys it. Vilas does not fuss a lot on hearing the exorbitant price charged by her. Flory asks for a week to vacate the apartment, and Vilas befriends her during this period. Later, she goes inside to make tea for them. Vilas sees some family pictures and inquires further.
Flory tells Vilas about her son Anthony, whom she pampered, but he grew up to be a thief as Flory could not see his flaws in childhood due to her love. She used to defend him from other members of the Chawl and his father.
Time passes and one day at a wedding function in the Chawl, she finds her son bludgeoned and in his dying state some precious diamonds to hide. They are not able to save him, police does not get anything after searching.
Flory had hidden the diamonds inside her sugar box in the kitchen. Flory heard on the news that 3 boys were involved in the robbery, 1 was shot dead, Anthony was arrested, and the 3rd boy was caught by the police, who told them that Anthony went straight to his house with the diamonds.
While hearing the story, Vilas becomes anxious and after putting sugar in his tea starts gulping it, while drenched in sweat. Flory reveals that she never got to meet that person who escaped and told the police about her son's location.She says that Vilas is that 3rd boy as he knew the diamonds are in the apartment, else why would he pay 80 Lakhs for a Chawl room. Flory also reveals that she has poisoned Vilas's coffee as he starts to go into cardiac arrest.Flory buries him in the floor matting of her house, and has avenged her son. Now she can leave this wretched house.
Same building Varsha (Masumeh Makhija) is facing daily abuse from her unemployed and alcoholic husband she still has feelings for her past lover Shankar (Sharman Joshi) and bonds well with her neighbor and tends to her own little son.
One day while having tea with her neighbor, she realizes that Shankar is now married to her and works in Dubai in a garment factory. She thinks about the time when she asked her dad for permission to marry Shankar and he refused saying that Shankar is a 12th class pass tailor, while she is a graduate. Shankar had asked for 1 year so that he can be manager and can ask for her hand in marriage. Shankar asks Varsha to meet him at a spot after 1 year and promises that if she doesn't show up, he will understand and will never try to pursue her. But after a year, Shankar failed to show up.
Shankar returns from Dubai and his wife invites Varsha and her family for dinner. They greet each other and Shankar sees how pathetic and toxic her husband is. While he is leaving, they clarify the argument only to know that Shankar understood the wrong address to meet her with similar names. They move on with guilt.Flory bequeaths her plot to Varsha where she settles down to embark upon a life of independence.
Suhail (Ankit Rathi) and Malini (Aisha Ahmed) fall in love being from different faiths much chagrin to their parents. Suhail's engagement has been fixed by his parents, to a Muslim girl. Malini's mom pushes too hard on her & she basically runs away with Suhail. They register for a marriage license. They spend the night at a motel. Malini's mom reveals to Suhail's mom that she hates Muslims because years ago she needed money for her husband's operation & borrowed it from a Muslim, who demanded sex from her in exchange. The Muslim was Suhail's dad & thus Malini is Suhail's sister. The police track down Malini & Suhail. Suhail is married off, while Malini and her mom leave town.
On the ground floor lives glamours Leela (Richa Chadda) who sends seductive vibes towards men around. Leela is herself attractive and divine as Maya, but the Maya ceases when we are shown a simple Leela sitting on a wheelchair, holding a newspaper with headline that an anonymous author has written a beautiful story about people of Mayanagar, followed by literary reviews which are spectacular.
In reality Leela is a cripple and uses her imagination to spice up the life of characters in her life. for e.g. Shankar is the driver who drives her to therapy every day. Flory is her nurse. Malini is a studious person, not interested in Suhail. while Varsha's husband is very submissive towards her.Leela was actually the author of all the three stories.
