Orphan Zhenya gets a job as a nurse for retired police colonel Vasily Petrovich. Their communication results in great friendship. He helps her look for her mother, and the girl tries to reconcile the colonel with her son Pyotr, with whom she falls in love. But Pyotr is not at all happy about the appearance of a "hanger" in their house - he believes that Zhenya has exclusively mercantile interests. Suddenly Vasily Petrovich dies. While sorting out the colonel's documents, the girl learns that he bequeathed his house to her.
