Synopsis

David Medina, an opportunistic and ambitious journalist, finds himself entangled in a web of power and corruption amidst an electoral contest in Colombia. With the intention of securing his financial stability, he publishes a book titled "1989" that favors the presidential candidate Francisco Arrieta, based on real events but manipulated to improve the politician's image. Despite the criticism and poor sales of the novel, David trusts that his support for the future government will bring him benefits once Arrieta takes office.

Everything changes when Camilo Arrieta, the candidate's nephew and David's close friend, discovers compromising images of his uncle at the family estate. Convinced that these photographs could ruin Francisco's presidential career, Camilo approaches David and shows him the negatives of the images. However, the journalist, concerned about his own interests and fearing the consequences, decides not to publish them and suggests that Camilo speak with Augusto Ramírez, another mutual friend.

The situation takes an unexpected turn when, five days later, Camilo is found dead in his own bathroom, an apparent suicide according to the medical report. Camilo's widow, Lucía Reyes, convinces David that her husband's death was not a suicide and persuades him to join her in uncovering the truth behind these dark events.

As David and Lucía delve into their search for answers, they discover a connection between Camilo's death, the death of Camilo's father, Álvaro Arrieta, in the 80s, and the world of the mafia and drug trafficking. Although they have evidence that could incriminate Francisco Arrieta, David faces a moral dilemma when he receives a tempting offer to hold a high position in the candidate's government.

Lucía confronts David, showing him the dark side of his silent complicity and making him see that his inaction makes him an accomplice to the murder of his best friend. Tormented by his choice, David struggles between fleeing to save his life or facing the consequences of revealing the truth and exposing Arrieta. Ultimately, he takes a stand and decides to risk everything to bring to light the corruption and crime surrounding Arrieta and his presidential campaign.

However, by this time, David finds himself discredited and dismissed by society. Despite the evidence in his possession, his reputation as an opportunistic journalist and generator of fake news has made no one believe him. Even so, David faces the challenge of exposing the truth, regardless of the consequences, and fighting for justice in an environment where corruption and deceit seem to prevail.
